  1. So here's the deal.....I did three things all at once and now my computer will no longer play my VCD's and SVCD's.

    1. I uninstalled Elecard player to get rid of that annoying watermark box that it puts in it's MPEG2's

    2. I installed WinDVD in order to make use of the codec in that program.

    3. I installed the free TMPGEnc mpeg-2 codec in the tools section.

Now I can play MPEG 1 and 2 just fine.....and no annoying little boxes anymore on the MPEG2's

But now when I go to open up a VCD (.DAT file) or SVCD (.MPG file) directly from the cd, it won't play at all. I tried WMP, Sasami, and a VCD player that I have and the computer just locks up and doesn't play the disc.

    Any ideas??

    Thanks!!

  2. Oh I forgot.....I actually did FOUR things at the same time.

In order to install WINDVD I had to install the latest version of DirectX before the install.

    Okay....that's it......anyone?

  3. Have you tried right clicking on the dat file and telling it to open with media player.

  4. Yes...that's what I meant when I said that I had tried all the different players.

Currently my .DAT files are associated with SASAMI, which has always worked in the past.

Now, after all the installs, it just sits there......blank screen, accessing the disc, and never renders any video or audio. SO do all the other players.

BUT, I can still play my mpeg's with all the media players.....just NOT VCD's or SVCD's.

    And I've tried both drives.

Could the new DirectX have anything to do with this? Or maybe a conflict in some type of codec priority? How would I even adjust that?

    ?????

    Thanks.

  5. Update time:

    Okay....so I uninstalled Sasami, WinDVD.

Re-installed WinDVD FIRST....them Sasami.....who knows if that makes a diff.

Now I can play mpeg 1 & 2, VCD .DAT files.....but i still can't play SVCD .MPG files!!

I have always been able to do this before....but now when I click on a .MPG in a SVCD folder Sasami just sits there and does nothing.

Does anyone know if there could be codec incompatibility between the WinDVD MPEG-2 codec and the TMPGEnc free MPEG-2 codec that I installed?

How would I figure that out? Is there a way to disable a codec temporarily/permanently?

    Thanks!

Now I'm thinking this is a stupid question....I didn't actually INSTALL the codec so much as place it in the TMPGEnc directory.

Maybe something with the new DirectX or WinDVD?

    Thanks.

  8. Well I can....

I guess it's just easier and faster to open it up the way I used to...by going into the SVCD itself!

I mean.....what the heck.....this is weird that I can't play SVCD .MPG files, but I CAN play MPEG 1 and 2 files.

If someone else had this problem, I'd say they were crazy.

Don't worry..plenny of stuff like that happens to even PROS
Computers are built to be quite fallible in the software (and conflicts ) area
Why would MICROSOFT put a REPAIR BUTTON in OFFICE?
(come to think of it what a bummer..the program has a repair button!
..and it ain't fixin yer files either!)

I would do just what you've done, selectively remove and re-install stuff you have the ability to re-introduce in a new order

I bought T2 the Extreme HI-DEF version (doesn't play smooth on less than a 3 ghz machine..which i don't have ...sorry to report!)
and the INTERACTUAL player on the DISC installed badly for no apparent reason

It was the only SOFTWARE PLAYER of FIVE that wouldn't show anything but a BLACK WINDOW with sound!
And this is the player to AUTHORIZE the media content on the disc..you need it to work!

so just like you uninstallling and reinstalling --took about 6hrs to track it down,.- I needed the earlier PC FRIENDLY version of interactual to make it work..but it works now!

and would'ya believe it? All the time their sister application (INTERACTUAL's WINDVD played the MPEG-2 content fine!!!!)
