I just converted my first dvd2vcd successfully on a cdrw, but when I tried to play it on my standalone player(JVC XV-511), it couldnt read the stupid cd. I checked the compatibility on this site and it should play it fine. https://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDname=JVC+XV-511&Search=Search Heres the link to the player compatiblility. Did I read it wrong? If so, please let me know.
Also, I want to buy a new player and my budget is around $75. What do you recommend I buy? Keep in mind that my burner cant burn dvd's. I'm looking for something reliable...in other words, something that plays stuff I burn. Thanks in advance to anyone who replies.

Before you rush to the store consider this.
My DVD player works fine with some brands of CDR and not others.
I found this was my problem, not format compatability. (not the same model as yours) You may still similiar this a new DVD player?
P.S. mine works with all brands of DVD-R I have tried. -
Well, I've tried a number of brands of cd's...and none of them work. I really dont know what else to do...any suggestions?

I just checked out your link. Your player doesn't seem to play CD-R. When it says that it plays VCD they are talking about factory pressed VCDs.
You need to find a DVD player that is capable of playing VCDs AND CD-Rs.
I don't really have any suggestions. With budget of $75 you aren't going to get a very good DVD player. Wal-Mart sells a lot of cheap Apex players. I would imagine most of them play CDR-s.
Just keep in mind, you get what you pay for. -
But I burned it on a cdrw...and it still doesnt play, what can I do?

BestBuy sells the Mintek 1600 DVD player for $50 or less and it will play anything you throw at it except mpeg4.

Actually CDRW disc's are harder to play than CDR disc's. Especially if you are trying to play the disc on a player that wasn't really designed to play recordable disc's.

If you live near a Fry's, they have the Panasonic S35 on sale for $80. after rebate. It is also available on their website at outpost.com. I own 3 of the S35's and love them. They play all the VCD's and SVCD's I have burnt, even the ones with menus. In addition the S35 is a progressive scan unit as well. I bought the Norcent DP 300 from Wal-Mart for $50. It plays my cd-rw and dvd-rw just fine. Hope this helps.
