  1. Just wondering with the information that Lite-On intends to release a multi-format 8x DVD burner within' the next few months...what is everyone's take on whether or not Sony will allow their current DVD BURNER OWNER'S the Luxury of a firmware update to burn at least one of the two formats @8x? I don't doubt Sony could do it...and know it's wishful thinking...but just curious what people think.

I am not extremely familiar with the technology...and am unsure what goes into a 8x burner that wouldn't go into a 4x burner..I would think the lasers, etc..are the same....if that is the case, it would be great to get a firmware release to burn 8x media.

As it is..I told people such as "bobw" to be patient....Sony's drives would burn 4x flawlessly..and it appears that is the absolute truth.

I've gotten more then 5 types of 4X media, most non brand name disks such as ACCU, OPTODISK, PRIME DISK, Samsung Beall - and + R's, Verbatim..etc...and ALL OF THEM burn @4x from start to finish in my DRU500AX.

Anyway, 15 minutes to burn a full DVD is incredible...I can't even imagine 8x media...that's less then 8 minutes a disk on average...WOW!

  2. To Defense:
I thought you only got Pionner A05 (because i only saw your 4x unbranded media result post with Pionner A05), anyway, just few question if you can anwser me, where did you get your PRIME 4x DISK? Does the PRIME 4X disc burn at 4X (15mins less) with SONY DRU-500AX? WHICH firmware DOES the 500AX you have to success burn it with 4X? I am thinking to buy PRIME 4x discs but nor can anyone post their result for burning this disc with 500AX, so i kind of stuck here. Thank you for share you finding with me.

  3. It will of course be impossible to fix 8x speed on a 4x writer. 8x requires a more powerful laser (about 140 mW vs. 100 mW for 4x) and better chipsets.

  4. A lot of people are all ready having problems burning at 4x with the Sony so I doubt it will ever do 8x.

  5. @atb, not sure where you read I have a Pioneer A05..unless someone else edited my post..lol..I have the one and only DRU500AX..and have loved it since the day I got it. Now, to answer your questions...every single one of the 4x media I have burns FLAWLESSLY thus far @4x..from start to finish. The funny thing is that usually RECORDNOW MAX will show you a time for 2x media as though it's burning 1x media..but within seconds that changes to reflect the actual 2x speed.

But with all of this 4x media, RNM shows you from the gun a 15 minute and in some cases 14 minutes to complete the process..and every disk thus far has been burned in under 16 minutes. I'm doing a good job of maximizing my space...having 4.33-4.36 GB's per disk.

I got all the disks from Meritline...including the Prime disks..which happen to be Gigastorage disks and work great....apparently they are more sensitive though then other disks..so i'm careful with them...

I am using the latest firmware for the DRU500AX 2.0F ......I am very pleased that all 5 brands of disks have burned and play flawlessly thus far.....I just have to run some more tests so I can try and see if one is the clear best of them all....and that will be the one I put a large quantity order in on.

Anyway, if you have any other questions you can PM me....

@jsl, do you manufacturer burners...or are just familiar with the technology? Sounds like you know your stuff..i'm just curious why a firmware update could allow a 1x or 2x burner to burn at twice the speed...4x...but couldn't jump up to 8x...also curious if it would be possible to change the laser in the DRU500AX to one that burns at 8x..is that too complicated or too expensive?

I know this was the case early on...but if you or anyone else can tell me what issues you are having and with what media....maybe I can give some insight.

Sounds odd to me that "MANY" people are still having issues burning 4x media when I am 6 outta 6 with 6 different brands....5 of them being unbranded media received from Meritline which burns and plays flawlessly..THUS FAR.

Try going back to 20e or what ever was shipped with the drive.

  8. @redlion, sounds more like a disk issue to me. I am not saying it is completely Ritek...but if you look at my post..i'm 6 out of 6 with the latest firmware. I personally disagree with posters going back and forth between flash firmware. That is a sensitive process and not to be played around with. I don't doubt that's what screwed up the Sony burners in the first place for many. If you want reliable 4x media, any of the aformentioned disks will work perfectly..although I am running more tests and experiments to see if I can get the top one or two...I will report them on the media forum when I do.
