Quite a lot is down to personal preference, I used to use ULead DVD MovieFactory 2, but got fed up with it constantly forcing a re-encode, no matter what settings and bitrates I used, so gave up and went over to use TMPGenc DVD Author

Its simple, very easy to use, fairly basic at the moment, but the latest version now supports motion menus, and the ability to change if you have just menus, just tracks or both

I'd say have a look at TMPgenc DVD Author, it can easily to what you want, I used it fairly recently to squeeze all 12 episodes of Fawlty Towers from 2 DVD's onto just one DVD-R, the actual authoring side of it was a doddle, plus you have a free fully functioning trial period to see if you like using it, before you have to register

But, this is just authoring software, it WON'T burn a DVD-R, it just creates the files, its upto you to burn these files using another piece of software. I use Nero, personal choice again, but there are loads to choose from

Basically, try the demos of :

TMPGenc DVD Author and Nero, see what you think

    This is my 'personal' preference

Very true steptoe, I quickly got fed up with the Ulead products as well.

I tried TMPGEnc DVD Author but found it too restrictive. Easy yes, but not very creative. So I gave DVD-Lab a try and love it. So much flexibility and power. Motion menus, paged or switched chapter menus. You can demux the video and transcode the audio, and burn to DVD.

Version 1.2.1 is out, the author is continually tweaking and handling user issues. This guy cares about his customer, unlike Ulead.

    For me:

I use AVI_IO to capture, I can spread the capture over my 3 HDs if space is limited.

I use VirtualDub and TMPGEnc for simple editing and Premiere for complex editing.

Then DVD-Lab for authoring and burning.

Works for me and I like the results.
