  1. Hi All,

I have a Sony Camcorder and I know how to make VCD's.I have a FIREWIRE card on my PC.I download the video from camcorder to my PC using VisualStudio software and then Render it to create mpeg and create VCD using B Recorder's Gold software. But with this VCD the clarity when played on DVD player is not Good.Am I missing anything in terms of the MPEG format( i use MPEG 29f high resolution) or dO i have to create AVI .how do I get the VCD to give good quality on the DVD player?

Other question is how can I make DVD with my present setup.I know I have to buy a DVD writer but what i don't know the exact steps that i need to follow to make DVD.

    Please Advice.

    Thanks
    Ravindra

I use Ulead Videostudi5 which came with my firewire card to capture and render the footage, then use b's gold to burn it to VCD. In regards to your query about resolution, the quality I get is ok with vcd's but nothing fantastic. If you burn them as a SVCD you may be able to get a better result, however I tried this once and it did not seem to make a difference. I suppose it all has to do with the source material i.e. GI-GO. As for the rest of your request, there is some very good information on the left hand side of your screen with many guides how-to etc. They are generally very informative.

First of all, don't expect too much from VCD.
Second, this all depends on how picky you are, and how much time/money/effort you're willing to give for this.

There are tons of things to try. First, I'd suggest you use an external MPEG encoder. I didn't like the MPEG encoders on NLE software (the last time I tried). Check out TMPGENC.

If you're still not happy with the results, you might want to go the XVCD route.

If again you don't like it, try SVCD/XSVCD.

Check the WHAT IS on the left for the details of XVCD/SVCD/XSVCD.

If your source would be from your digital camcorder, you need to encode those DV AVIs to MPEG2 (after you do your edits of course). Again, the WHAT IS will be helpful to find out the details. Once you have your MPEG2, you'll need a DVD Authoring Software (check out the TOOLS section). There are guides posted here for some authoring software...

  4. Not a whole lot you can do about quality with compliant VCDs. Using a different encoder may help if you know how to use filters and have knowledge about the different settings within the encoder itself. The best way to learn is to follow some of the guides to the left and experiment for yourself. If your player can play SVCD, or XVCD, you may want to try that. Better yet, get a DVD writer, it'll give you the quality you're looking for and depending on how you capture (to mpeg or avi), you could save a lot of time because there are pretty good cards out there that capture to DVD compliant mpeg2. When you get the hang of that, you can capture to DV avi and do the encoding on a dedicated encoder which would give you more flexibility.
