  1. I am using Virtual dub with an ATI TV Wonder capturing at 352x288, AVI using Picvideo Mjpeg compression.

The problem is that I was capturing fine from VHS and dropping maybe 1 frame an hour and now all of a sudden it's changed to 50 frames a minute! I've done a defrag and can't see why this is happening. If it worked several times before why not now? The only thing I can think of is that the video source has some noise at the bottom of the screen - can this cause problems? I tried to mask it off but it put processing through the roof and drops more frames!

Any ideas? Am I capturing at the 'optimal' resolution and using adequate compression for vcd conversion in TMPeng?

    Thanks!

  2. I don't have a solution sorry, but I am experiencing the exact same symptoms. Using my VCR, some Tapes cature with minimal frame loss while other tapes can lose up to 5-8 frames per second.
I dont think its the quality of the recording as I have successfully captured a Video tape recorded 15 years ago.

I am using exactly the same compression and resolution settings as you but I have tried others with no improvement.

Using the same RCA leads plugged into my Camcorder captures fine every time using the exactly the same settings. I have a fast PC and a fast HDD so I dont think it has anything to do with processing power or lack there of.

I'm starting to lean towards my TV card being the problem. Maybe it cant get the frames to VirtualDub quick enough.

One thing I am yet to try is setting both the VCR and TV Card to NTSC instead of PAL. Apart from that, I'm stumped!

If I get anywhere I'll let you know

  3. i have an ati tv wonder too. i just captured a boxing match which lasted for 43 minutes and dropped 50 frames i think.
used divx4 codec for video compression and pcm for audio compression. i don't know how to solve this problem either.
used the same setting last night on musical show but didn't seem to experience this problem. anyway, i'll try to capture some more and let you know the result.
