Pinnacle Studio 8: Output render is 0kb or incomplete (help)

If anyone uses Studio 8 (actually 8.5), please let me know what type of video file you use as a source, i.e. before render output. I have tried several types, from divx avi to low-quality test mpeg1, and Studio always chokes on the last part of the timeline or the file has 0kb filesize. This is driving me nuts since everything seems right except I can't get an output file!
I have been perusing the Pinnaclesys help site and am waiting on questions, but official answers sometimes arent as helpful as another frustrated user having the same problems as me!
I really need help.

BTW: I have original 8mm footage dubbed to a DVD and now need to edit the footage in Studio. Anyone want to suggest the best way to convert the DVD video to editable source?
