What is wrong with the new Sony DRU-500A?

I personally have a Pio 104, which works well enough but I think if I had waited some more, I woulda got the Sony.

I have both the Sony 500 DRU A and the newer AX model. What drawbacks. My experience after 600 burns has been nothing but stellar. Highly recommend the Sony!!! :P

I have two Sony's, well actually only one since the first one died. I have heard good things about the new NEC dual format drive and it's almost a $100 cheaper than the Sony. I'm also sure the soon to be here Pioneer will be a better drive than the Sony.

Meself i Would say get the NEC Duel Format it's very pickly about what media it use's but when u get the right one it's a super writer...
i have Done about 100-130 DVD's so far PSX2 xbox moveis put muti SVCD on 1 DVD and all has worked out just Fine

I own a Sony DRU-500a burner and highly recommend it. I have had it for 6 months and have not made any coasters yet. Either I'm really good or the burner is that good. I think its the later. Anyway, to help the prevention of coasters, use the enclosed DVD+RW disc to practice on. If you make a mistake, just erase the disc and try again. It has worked very well for me and most DVD+RW discs will play on stand alone DVD players. I am sure that Pioneer will make a good dual format burner, but with anything new, there are always growing pains. Some of these pains can last a while and can cause consumers not to be satisfied with the product, or to return it. Anyway, the current model of the Sony is DRU-510a, and is sold at retail $350.00 US dollars. At a computer trade show this past week end, my friend purchased one for $278.00. If there are any trade shows in your area, try buying the burner there because the vendors are selling these drives cheaper than Best Buy, etc. My only other advice is to purchase and install a DVD-ROM drive in your system, if you don't have one already. DVD-ROM drives play CDs, DVDs, DVD+R/RW, and DVD-R/RW, and are very good to use if you intend to "rip" comercial DVDs in the future. Use the DVD-ROM drive to do all the playing and ripping of CDs and DVDs, and the burner to do all the burning. With DVD-ROM drives costing about $40.00 and the burner about $350.00, do the math and treat your burner well. The Sony's may be a hardy drive, but I don't want to stress it too much. I too own the Sony DRU-500AX and I am thrilled to death with it. I bought some real cheap DVD-R's off ebay and have had terrific experience with it. I have had no errors in burning and highly recommend it.

There is only one answer to your question right now, and that's the Sony. Soon Pioneer will be coming out with an all format burner and it may well be better (at the very least it will be cheaper). It is available for preorder now, but if you are thinking about waiting until people have it in their hands and have tested it for a bit (highly recommended) then you're probably looking at a couple of months from now.

I love my Sony, and it's burned hundreds of disks without problems, but I also recognize Pioneer makes great stuff (although I'm not overly crazy about the players they make -- for some reason they are among the worse when it comes to playing authored DVDRs) and I'm sure their burner will be just fine.

So your answer is -- if you want one now, get the Sony. If you are willing to wait, see what people think about the A06 from Pioneer (you may still decide you want the Sony after that). Either way, I don't think you can lose (and boy is it nice to be able to go to the store and pick up whatever brand of media -- and whatever type -- is on sale. Sure glad I didn't get stuck with a single format drive).

NEC 11300A is a great buy for less than 200.00 and is dual format so far no coasters and every DVD-R or DVD+r I have used work like a charm. but you need to flash it, cause the firmware that came with suck ass.
