    Hey!

I've got a B&W 450Mhz G3 that didnt come with a DVD Drive. I recently bought a Lacie d2 DVD-R/RW Firewire drive/USB 2.0. I've been tryin to rip movies, but many of the programs require you to play the movie in DVD Player so that OS X "authenticates" it. I got past the installer issue, but when I open DVD Player up, it says I don't have the right hardware ( b/c my DVD drive isn't apple's stock drive )

Is there a way to play OR rip movies with a 3rd party drive?

    Thanks!

The easiest way is to use VLC (VideoLAN Client) instead of Apple DVD Player.

The harder way is to author a very short DVD (like a movie trailer or something), and save it as a Toast disc image. Before you begin processing a DVD, mount this Toast image ... This will fool Apple DVD Player into thinking it has an internal Combo drive, and will then play DVD's in external DVD drives.

I dont think you can use an external dvd-rw for apps such as apple dvd player, and iApps.

Maybe someone else can comment on this?!

I do know that the drive will only work with a third party app like Toast for you to actually use it as a burner (both cd and dvd) and that it will not be supported with apps such as iTunes and iDVD..

I cant remember at this moment if an external dvd player will be accessable from apple dvd player.

the only way i can think of at this moment would be to use toast to make a disk image of the dvd to your HD, but im not even sure if that will work either!

no harm in trying, just access the dvd in the drive using toast, disk copy, set it to read from that drive, then go to FILE SAVE AS DISK IMAGE and save it to your comptuer

you can then mount it and use it in the apps like dvdbakcup and dvd2one, only if it images to your hd.

im a little drunk and tired now, so if im missing an easy answer someone please chime in

nothing like having the day off!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. I have the Lacie d2 dvd-r/rw firewire burner connected to my ti-book. I open dvdbackup, then I place a dvd in the Lacie drive. The dvd mounts, Apple dvd player automatically starts up. I let it play a few minutes, stop it, then quit apple dvd player. I click-drag the dvd disc image to the dvdbackup window, release, then process files. Have not had an error during the ripping stage doing it this way. My ti-book does have a dvd-rom drive, so that might be why I can use the Lacie drive for rips. Also, are you System 9 or 10.x?

  6. I use an external Toshiba FW DVD-ROM drive to do my ripping and as soon as I insert a dvd , the Apple DVD player opens the movie and starts to play.
My system is an 867 mhz G4 running OS 10.2.6.

  7. That's great, jamerican, but has nothing to do with this topic. Unless you have an internal IDE DVD drive, Apple DVD player will not start up. Firewire drives don't work. Your 867 mhz G4 running OS 10.2.6 must also have an internal drive, does it not? The original poster has a CD-whatever internal drive, so he/she needs to use this hack. There's also a Toast-related hack, but this one's much better.

Just wondering...this patch is for which version of Apple DVD Player?

  10. AFAIK, it should work with any version of the Apple DVD Player for OS X. Specifically, this includes the 3.x versions of DVD player, the most recent version being 3.2.

Sorry about the mis-read. Yes, my G4 does have a Superdrive (103).
