    is it possible to link up mutiple computers to encode one video file through either a network port or usb/firewire?? anyone know?? if you do, point me in the right direction...

    you'd need an encoder that could function across a network or a render farm setup.

    I'm not sure what's out there, commercially, for the average user. I think most of the stuff like that is custom made, either by software companies for Hollywood studios, or modified by the studios themselves.

    In the linux world, I know there's Cinelarra, which has support for multiple machines and operating across networks.

    I guess you can do the following:
    1. write bunch of avisynth scripts, each of them serving a segment of the avi file
    2. run bunch of encoders, each of them opening one avisynth script
    3. merge the resulting mpg files

    Not sure how scalable this solution will be, but I guess with 4 machines the encoding will be about 2 times faster than with one machine

    Maybe I should write a program which will do this automatically (couple of days effort) and start selling it to Hollywodd for $1000000

    Alternatively you can just run your encodings overnight as most people do
