I wasn't in favour of the three day wait (I thought it was too long) but I can see it's validity
How about a further seven days where poster's can only post in the newbie forum?
The number of niave 'I haven't read the guides' posts in the regular forums is on the increase.
I'm all for interaction, in fact the quote below may demonstrate to all those intent on flaming me (for the above suggestion) my actual stance on new member's, but it's just a thought
This idea may even encourage people to read the excellent post made by dumwaldo

I don't want to fly in the face of public opionion here [snip] but...
...I am sick and tired of getting critism from experineced forum users who 'assume' you haven't done your homework.
Just because you ask a question that's been asked before doesn't mean you haven't looked.
As for "...if i had $1 for every post that can be answerd by placing a link to another page of this very site", well I doubt there isn't many questions that *haven't* been asked in the past, so why don't we just close down the forum and replace it with a simple search box?
I'm not advocating the 'how do I copy a dvd ' idiots, but when I first arrived (and I'm a little more experienced and wiser now) I couldn't follow some of the guides and unless I posted 'I've searched the forum and can't find what I need' I got accused of lazyness.
Some people need a little assistance, we all have an responsibility to assist and give something back and give these people a nudge in the right direction, not put them off the site.

Personally I still think 7 days is extreme but it does have some merit as something to consider. However I'm not sure if the board can have different waiting periods for different forums. A modification of the board itself may be needed for something like that. Or I could be 100% off base, 50/50 chance either way.

A duration of seven days was of course only a suggestion, a starting point if you like, the principle of only posting in a certain forum was my main concern
Don't forget, I thought "unable to post for three days" was excessive
As I said, just a thought

I don't know that extended waits would help. I think the general issue is people not reading. They want the answer handed to them and to be spoon-fed on how to do this or that. Laziness is a key factor, and I find most of this tends to come from our younger audience. I enjoy helping, but some of these people honestly remind me of the little kids.

some newbies figured a way around the three day thing. i've been pm'ed by some the moment they joined asking for ways to copy dvds and asking for places to download movies.

I've gotten those too. I think that the imit is only on posting, not on other forum activities.

personally i would agree with a 7 day wait, or at least a 7 day restriction on everything but the newbie section. The people on this board who are serious about all this video stuff (as these days we talk about lotms more than just VCD) devote a lot of time and energy to it. if we're all prepared to stick around finding things out and helping others for -years- then it won't kill a newbie to wait days. in any case, if it's all been asked before a 7 day restriction on asking an old question doesn't matter.

I love it when they send me pm asking about how to use Virtualdub and stuff like that.

  10. When people join this forum, should you assume they don't know anything ?

All a person has to do is register and come back in a weeks time to start asking questions, is this not a forum for answering the same question over and over ?

Are you so fed up with answering the same question ?

    Oh and what's a "Virtualdub"

I'm still a newbie when it comes to all of this, but if I post something that there is already an answer for (say, in another forum/topic) I don't mind getting a sarcastic response about not doing my homework - if it was my fault I didn't research an issue thoroughly, and I deserve what I get I think a lot of the newbie's take the sarcastic remarks to seriously, then get mad. Maybe they tried to research it, but were looking in the wrong place, I don't know. It's the posts where some one is asking about how to do this, or that, when there is a perfectly good guide on the left side of the screen, that are annoying/funny. Or when they ask why an 800 MB video file will fit on an 80 min/700MB CD. Those are the annoying/funny posts. Overall though, I'm not sure a 7 day waiting period for the advanced forums would help. Wouldn't the topic still show up on the main page, even if it's in the newbie section? I think more people just need to read/research more before they post. Because there is a ton of good information on this site, and even if you don't have a question/problem, you can still learn a lot just by reading the posts - I know I have.
Also, where can I get some warez :P

  12. Seven days!!! You have got to be kidding me!!!! How can I wait 7 days when Blockbuster wants these movies back in 2!!!!! That's just not fair!!!!! I can't rent these movies again, my parents won't let me!!!! I need to copy these now now NOW!!!!!! Now I have to waste my precious time and actually learn something c'mon I go to public school!!!!!! I must have someone to hold my hand and tell me if I even need a DVD drive on my computer. C'mon I can't believe that a site this popular doesn't even have a hand holding guide to copying DVDs!!!!

7 day waiting period, great idea. Maybe posts like the above will disappear forever!!! Of course there are some patient Long John Silvers out there.

Well genius, this site was NOT made so you can pirate movies from your local Blockbuster. If that's your only argument, then too bad. That's the PRIME REASON we need to make a 7-day rule. People looking for the quick fix without reading the forums, rules, and guides SHOULDN'T be allowed to post.

EDIT: To Rude_skankin: Since I'm not sure if you were serious or not, or if you were repeating the words of somebody else, this isn't a personal attack. Just an attack on those ideas represented by the part I put in quotes.

Wow! You two guys below (Marco33 and Conquest10), you beat me to my edit! Amazing. I'd actually caught myself before you responded. Guess I need to type faster!

When I first joind this site. I asked people to help point me to guides to do X. I think that's valid.

One of the main problems I had was, all the guides are out of date. They show you how to do it but, the versions of software are no longer available. They have extra setting or no longer have the same set ups. I guess we can't keep updating them ever time a new version of dycrpter comes out.
Don't give in to DVD2ONE, that leads to the dark side.

This is a problem. But it's a problem with all technology. Especially when authors of them aren't paid.

I have a heck of a time getting LS to update his guide when it needs it (the guide I put in my signature).

And about my response above, I was actually editing it when ya'll responded. I didn't miss the joke, I just got sidetracked between reading it and writing up the response (phone rang).

  17. Post a quiz about making VCD's with the info available in the forum or the guides. then whenever they pass the quiz, they can post!

  18. 7 days is IMHO excessive.

The 3-day wait is no more than a deterrent for those people who have absolutely no patience at all (i.e., they join, post and then want an instant answer) and spammers. We don't really need those people joining.

If people want to get around rules, they will always find a way. I don't see any particular reason why we should make the joining process any more restrictive than it already is.

    Regards.

Utterly, utterly incredible that you can be allowed to consistantly post such rubbish.
You only saving grace is you clealy decided to read the whole post at the second attempt, something for which you lambast people who you class as youngster's on a regular basis.
Thank goodness for your edit, I wouldn't want you to appear stupid and see you complaining about yourself on the feedback page.

    Again, utter, utter, rubbish.
It doesn't hurt to admit you're not perfect once in a while.
Have a day off please txpharoah, I think some of us prefer your proffessional opinion to the overall theme of the site, rather than your 'everyone is worthless apart from me' attitude.

    Silky, look at the numbers...

Silky, you're great and all, but don't try to be so smart and condescending. I wrote a response, realized I was a goof by missing the joke, went back to edit, the phone rang, talked for about 10 minutes, went to the bathroom since I was up, came back to the computer to finish editing, hit submit. Two people had already replied. Wow. Edited it again to address the two posts below. Saw a few typos, edited it again. The end.

If I screw up, I don't mind admitting it. Yeah, I screwed up by not reading the whole thing, but I caught it myself right away this time. That's why I get to edit post. Next time it may be you or somebody else. But not this time. I fixed it, but just not in time for others to beat me to it. Who cares anyway? Why try so hard to find a flaw in something I say?

I don't, if I did spend as much time trying to find flaws as you suggest I wouldn't be the kind to suggest your 'capture' post be made a sticky, now would I?
I think we're both wise enough to not turn this into anything other than a discussion so if I may I'll continue...
My point is very clear txpharoah, if you wish to continue to preach your offensive nature to others that sometimes may fall foul of the rules then prepare to accept some back in return.
I remember someone once mentioned the word moderator to you, and your response was you were too busy.
You seem to spend an inordinate amount of time complaining about the rights and wrongs of many, many users, and I would love to see your statistics as to the percentage of whining you do compared to the assistance you give.
I have no problem in giving praise when it's due and despite other opinions I've seen here personally I value your professional input here, but by the very fact that you fail to learn from any of the mistakes you make whilst continuing to whine, complain and be downright ignorant in some of your comments doesn't make you the invaluable member you should be.
We've both made our points, have a nice day.

    all i can say is

i laughed so hard when i saw your post txpharoh. lets see how it goes.... something like "if you care to read another members post before posting yourself that would be a good start. don't bother posting if you don't understand the topic or have nothing to add."
    sounds about right.
