I'm plugging along with my Pioneer 104, want to leapfrog the 4x writers. Any intelligence on when people will bring out 8x writers? (I'm assuming they're technologically feasible?)

No definite answer here, but I would say about another 1 - 1 1/2 years we'll see the release of the first 8X burner. But to tell you the truth.........a 4X burner will burn an entire DVD in under 15 minutes. That's fast enough for me. It's really not the burning that takes so much time, it's all the other stuff.

  3. The question is also about when is 8x media going to be sold? And how do we know our players can handle things written at that speed?

as in cd burners -- 4 speed writing may be just about at the wall -- maybe 6x , but 8x is mighty fast ...

  5. 8x DVD writers will be released in H2 this year. BenQ has said that it will release a 8x DVD writer already in Q3 but I doubt you will actually be able to buy one before Q4.

    Why?
We used to sit and watch a 2X CD burner for half an hour, just hoping it would make a real, playable disk, rather than choke at the 35 minute mark.
DVD burner Xs are 9 times the CD X. It takes 15 minutes for a DVD to burn, and you are crying that it's too slow. What the hell, son. Put them all on your HDD, with a 133 MHZ buss. MAYBE you'll be happy. Everybody else is saying to cut their CD-R back to 4X to get a true burn, and you want to go to 8X DVD-R (or +R, no matter.) We never are satisfied, are we?

I don't know if it's the whole point of technology, but it certainly is the whole point of salesmanship. NEW! IMPROVED! FASTER! Gotta have that one. This one's a slow, old, piece of junk. And, in computers, you hardly dare leave the store with the new one, for fear they'll release the next step after you reach your car.
And, I'm as guilty as the next guy.
And, frankly, I hope they DO come out with a 6 or 8X by the time I buy my first DVD burner. Then I'll start crabbing about the slowpoke, too.
