What is the best program for converting/burning AVI files? I have ConvertXtoDVD and its been great but I wanted to know if there are any faster converters. It takes like an hour to convert.

    Oh. An hour. Gosh.
If best==fastest in your opinion, try WinAVI. It sucks, is unreliable, and produces crap, but it's fast.
Fastest (and incidentally unbeatibly best) in not to convert at all, but get a DVD player that also plays AVI. Can be had for about the same sum as WinAVI/ConvertX2DVD, so the choice is simple.

Okay, I guess I should have asked if an hour is normal for converting. I guess I should stick with ConvertXtoDVD? I don't want WinAVI at all if it's crap.

Yeah, i was thinking it's a good thing he was not around back in the day when it would take 12-18 hours to convert something to a VCD

Do. 1 hour is really fast for AVI to DVD. But not converting is faster.

  6. Yeah, if it's Divx, save time and headaches by just getting one of the numerous capable players out there.

The best bet, is a Divx certified DVD player, then just burn the files as data on CD/DVD. Saves you time, money, and has better quality.

If you want faster conversion, then build a faster computer. Conversion is cpu intensive, the faster the PC/cpu, the faster the conversion.

Is there a trick to burning Divx onto a DVD+/-R? I've burned a couple disks and none of my Divx enabled players will load them.

I used whatever software is built into Vista. I think all it did was record the files as data.

Then use YOUR originals (!) to make more appropriate DivX files according to the specs of your players!!!

No trick involved in burning DivX/AVI disks - just plain data disks.
If your player is DivX Ultra certified, you can burn .divx files. If not, you have to use .avi
That the DivX/AVI file is created within the specifications of what your player can handle is a matter of course.

I have two non-Ultra players that happily play .divx files. They simply ignore any Ultra features, but still see multiple audio/embedded subtitles etc. My brother has two players (different models) from the same local seller. One plays them happily, the other doesn't see then because they don't have a .avi extension. .Divx is, for the most part, and extended version of the .avi container.

Thanks guys. I burned .avi as data and finalized, but my players give me "disk error" I'll keep tinkering.
