  1. I have been using DVDShrink 1.03 (freeware) and really like the features it offers. Sometimes I receive excellent results but at times I am getting artifacts (green blocks) and a shakey picture periodically throughout the movie... even in those that require no compression.

I have been reading about DVD2one and DVD95Copy and I believe DVD95Copy has the features I am looking for (it seems to offer the same features as DVDShrink) but I wanted to ask about the quality before I purchase it.

How does it compare to DVDShrink?

Are there any other DVD9 to DVD5 software programs worth considering?

My biggest gripe with DVD compression software (I tend to use DVDShrink at the moment, as well!) is:

EVERY single one fails to support some reasonable feature.

DVD2One, for example, doesn't decrypt - and insists that some non-encrypted files ARE encrypted, making it useless for the purpose of shrinking any homecooked movie splices or anything like that. Every time I merge up a couple of SVCD's and demux/upsample/mux... it usually ends up being A LITTLE too big. So I want to squish it... but no luck.

DVDXCopy (and its derivatives): Don't support reading files from the hard drive. Arbitrary distinction, and yet SO annoying.

DVDShrink: No customizable compression levels. If Level2 is WAY too big and Level3 is WAY too small, tough. So I always end up with DVD images that are 3.9GB, which is a waste of 10% of the DVD space. I'd LOVE to get that 10% back in video quality, thanks.

I haven't tried DVD95Copy, but now that you've brought it back up I will play with it tonight and let you know what I think.

I would put DVD95Copy's picture quality below DVD2one and about equal to DVDShrink. Of course, you've opened a can of worms and will get a thousand different opinions.

    DVD2One is better quality?

DVD2One's compression is equal throughout the DVD whereas DVD95Copy you can lower the quality of say just the menu's and get superior main movie quality. If you reduce the extras aswell the superiority is even greater regarding the main movie quality which is of course the most important feature on the DVD for most people

but then again every user uses what they feel is best but I feel I should mention this in DVD95Copy's defence for the benefit of newbies as it is quite often forgotten about

at the moment though version 1.5 seems to be having a few troubles but no doubt it will be fixed in the next version. Version 1.4 is the best yet and also available for download

I'm sure you can still get a trial and 10 day money back guarantee also if you do buy it after the trial expires

www.dvd95copy.com is the link by the way

  6. Because I'm lazy LOL lately I have been using DVDX Copy Xpress. I seldom use DVD95 but when I did it worked well for me.

I record 'movie only' and that's what I was thinking of. To each, his own.

  10. Notice how many views you are getting but few replies. Most people have seen the heated arguments that these threads create an just avoid the whole thing.

For me it depends on the movies value to you. For regular movies that I don't think I'll watch more than a few times, shrink first unless it requires over level 3/4 or if shrink crashes etc. DVD2one for almost all other regular movie scenarios. I usually don't keep menu's etc. I use IC7 for movies that I really care about.

People talk about CCE being the best but I'm going to have to be sold that IC7 can be significantly improved on.

ditto on IC7.... use it almost exclusively now. Only if a movie has to go below 70% do I wip out dvd2avi and tmpgenc.
    Have a good one,

  12. if the movie is 5.5gig or less (with only audio track I want) I use DVD2one

If it's bigger than 5.5gig or that I keep the extras, then I use IC7

  13. I use DVD Toolbox and then either DVD2One or IC7, same as the last post. I can't get my preview window to work on IC7. I'm using nVidia gForce4 Ti4200 graphics card. It works real well with everything else. Could it be a driver issue? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
