Hi,
I have several .mpg files and I really want to know how to make and add permanent subtitle for VCD. There are many links out there are showing how to make and add subtitle but they are all for SVCD or DVD.
Can anyone help? Thank you very much in advance.
Looking forward for your reply.

if the movie is allready in mpeg1 format, then you have a problem.
the only way i know of that you can add subtitles to an mpeg1 file is rencoding the whole thing.
you can use virtual dub to open the mpeg1 file and add subtitles that you make, and frameserve to the encoder you want to use.
it whould be better if you had the original avi and add the subtitles
using the same method.
to make subtitles you can use substation alfa (i think thats the name)HELL AINT A BAD PLACE TO BE -
Thanks for you fast reply. Yes, all of my files are mpeg1 format. It's already converted to VCD actually.
Anyway, I've just found this very useful site how to make and add subtitle using VirtualDub: http://customlogick.4t.com/reviews/sub.htm
However, the software Sub Station Alpha is a little hard for me to use. Also, adding subtitle can be a painful job I believe. I guess I'll pass it.
Thanks again.

How do you intend to play the files--with a Settop hardware player or with a software program on a computer?
If the former, yes you'll have to re-encode.
If the latter, you CAN add selectable subtitles to a VCD. YES, a VCD!
The secret (which I've written about in a previous post), is that you add an ASX metafile to the ISO section of the VCD. This ASX file will reference your MPEGAV\AVSEQ##.DAT files and play them as a playlist in WMP.
The big bonus for you doing it this way is that you can also reference SAMI-formatted subtitles from the same ASX file, and these SAMI files will overlay the MPEG files and be switched off and on at will.

Hi Cornucopia,
I'm not sure if I can fully understand your instructions. But thanks for all the help. Actually, I give up of the idea of adding the subtitle because it takes so much time and efford to do it.
