I have a movie I ripped with smartripper and then sent to DVD2AVI. My confussion is this, DVD2AVI reports this movie as, 23.976fps interlaced video. I can clearly see that it is telecined. I can watch the video frame by frame and see 3 progressive frames followed by 2 interlaced frames.
Question 1
Does DVD2AVI see a 23.976fps progressive film with 3:2 pulldown as interlaced video, because it actually is isn't it?
Question 2
Do I tell Tmpgenc to encode this video at 23.976 fps interlaced without 3:2 pulldown or 29.976 fps interlaced without pulldown.
Question 3
Do you only tell Tmpgenc to encode at 23.976fps with 3:2 pulldown
when you can clearly see that the source video is 23.967 fps progressive which would actually be 24p or NTSC film.
I hope I am not confussing anyone as to what I am asking I think I have the answers clear in my own head but just want to make sure that I understand. What to ask the experts out there.
Thanks for the help,

Try changing the FORCE FILM option to NONE, and then hit preview. Some versions of DVD2AVI were quirky. If this setting was actually turned on when previewing, then DVD2AVI would report wierd output. Also remember that some intro pieces of a movie may be interlaced (studio logo's and such). Ignore these, and verify the actual film content. It may also flash rapidly between progressive and interlaced. This is normal for telecnied material. Since you've already verfied that the output is actually telecined, then use the FORCE FILM option. Your output will be progressive 23.976 fps.

Try using DVD2AVI version 1.76. It's the only version I use anymore. You can get it at www.doom9.org in the downloads section (it's the only version they offer).Impossible to see the future is. The Dark Side clouds everything... -
thanks DJRumpy but this raises some more confussion to me so please bear with my stupiddity.
I used the force film option in DVD2AVI. and when I import it to Tmpgenc and double click Source Range and watch it frame by frame, this is where I clearly see 3 progressive and 2 interlaced frames. If DVD2AVI uses "Force Film" shouldn't my output be viewed as all progressive frame in the source mode of Tmpgenc? Also I am using ver 1.77 DVD2AVI. -

I did try ver 1.76 and if the force film is not checked the preview does read 29.97 interlaced and it does look to be interlaced in DVD2AVI preview window. When force frame is checked, it reads 23.97fps and interlaced. So basically, I should preview the movie with the force film unchecked to get real results. If then it shows 23.97 I should use force film? is this correct. Will it show progressive if that is what is and interlaced if that is what it is?

DVD2AVI is certainly not without it's bugs. I have had telecined input, that DVD2AVI saw as interlaced. In the end, you should rely on yourself to make the proper determination as to what kind of input your processing. I always examine my input to ensure it's telecined. Don't reply on DVD2AVI when it reports "interlaced". Verify it manually in those cases. You can safely assume it's correct if it reports FILM, or XX% Film (XX being a percentage value, like 91% for example). You should use the Force Film option ONLY if your input video is telecined. If it's interlaced, then leave the force film option off. You said that you clearly saw a 3:2 pattern of progressive and interlaced frames, so I'm assuming you already know how to do this. This indicates a telecined source, so you would use the Force Film option.
