As with most things on EBay, you can find them cheaper, new from ecommerce sites. It's available new for $195 with free shipping here: http://www.esbuy.com/piondv4xdvdr.html.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté."

Esbuy.com always seem to have a better deal than ebay. Sorry, wish this was a more known fact then you could have saved a little, but the important thing is you have a superdirve and have it working properly.

The reason they are cheaper here, i think, is that they are "bare drives" meaning its just the drive, no papers, no cables, no software....

but that doesnt matter so much for us. Usually we have the software already, and the cables are already in your mac. You may need a jumper or two if you are using this in addition to an existing drive.

One thing to note if you are using your superdrive in addition to another drive, superdirves must be set as MASTER and located at the endpoint of the cable, inorder for it to work properly with iApps.

I got a tosiba superdrive from them just not to long ago to put into one of my comptuers. It was $169 from esbuy.com yet was going for well over 200 on ebay and Esbuy.com had free shipping

Likewise, they have a tab that says DEALMAC, which usually has great deals for dealmac subscribers/readers

I have to say hear, hear! with eBay selling things higher than they should be sold. I saw someone take Virtual Dub's open source code, edit its window to say LuxuriousityVideo when launched.

The culprit is selling it as a cheaper way to capture and edit video other than Adobe Premiere, for $9.95! And what makes me even madder is his customers are thanking him, and giving him rave reviews.
    Hello.

  7. The opening page for this website has the pioneer DVR-105 for $179.00! So it pays to look around.
For the record Mac OSX 10.2.6 a free update let you use a Pioneer DVR-105/SuperDrive set to slave. This lets people who can afford it to use two of them!

NOTE: Super drive's set to slave will not work with iApps. (iDVD, iTuens (if you use the cd-r ability) Just an FYI!

  9. Just purchased a dvr-105 from esbuy.com. Popped into a 800 Mhtz G4 tower and it will only burn at 1X.

Is there a firmware update or something that I can't seem to find?

I know it is not my media because I burn 2x in my Emac 800.

    Please help.

My understanding is that this drive is 1x, 2x and 4x rated. The base firmware should be letting you have those options, uneless you really dont have 2x or higher media, in which case you would get only 1x burn

Tell ya what, go to apple icon at top left of screen, get info on your mac. Click MORE or whatever it says that loads the apple system profiler

then go to devices, which i think is the tab that lets you see what your drive is.

Then copy all the information down that the system is showing you for the drive itself.... location, ID, etc.

I always assumed the base firmware for this drive was set for up to 4x burns, but I could be wrong, i dont have this drive myself.

  11. Im currently not in front of the computer itself so I can't clip the details but after posting the first one I checked the firmware in Apple System Profiler and it is using firmware revision 130.

    Still 1x burns ?

    I burn 2x with the same media in a HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GCA-4020B (EMAC 800)

    but only 1x same media in a dvr-105 (G4 400 Mhtz)

    Thanks

Well thats not to say the media is rated for higher than 1x. Your pioneer may be more sensitive to this media type which must truly be 1x

For example, its well known to myself that DVD PRO Grade A disks are 1x rated, yet I can still burn them at 2x with Toshiba Sd-5002. They should not do this.

So i put these same disks into a Pioneer 104 (that a friend has) he can not burn any faster than 1x on these disks

So to say that you can not burn any faster than 1x now on this drive is nothing new.

I suggest you get some 2x or for that matter 4x rated disks and try that then come back and post your results.

what type of dvd-r media are you using that is only letting you burn at 1x!

  13. Ok i understand now!

I got the media from Meritline.com they are Accu 4.7GB DVDR Blank Media. (1x media! but burn 2x in a Sony DRU-500A) according to the site.

I will try some true 2x media to see what happens.

Thank you for all your help on this forum! You seem to be knowledgeable on a bunch of topics!

    Your assistance is truly appreciated!

I know that the pioneer A03 had a firmware lockout type of thing that would only allow certain media to burn at 1x even though it was rated as 2X.

I think it depended on the quality of the media also if the quality of the media was good enough you could burn at 2X though.

Verbatims would never burn at 2x for me but the apple and pioneer always would with my A03.

    Now I have a A03 and a sony DRU500
