  1. I'm using my video card hooked to my satelitte receiver to record some movies. What can I do if a movie is like 2 hours and 41 minutes...it's to large to fit on one dvd. And it's recorded as one single file.

Am I going to have to use tmpgenc to re-encode it to a smaller bitrate? Or what can I do.

    Thanks!

  2. Well, it appears that you answered your own question. Yes, you will need to reencode at a lower bitrate. TMPGEnc does a great job, and it shouldn't be too difficult to find a guide for it either here on this website, or on Doom9's website.

  3. Yeah either re-encode at a lower bitrate, cut/crop part of the video, or spilt the file onto 2 DVDR discs. Did you use a bitrate calculator to determine the predict size of your encode? Also what format is your audio (and what program are you authoring with).

It looks like you encoded with TMPGenc which produces mp2 audio. Some programs will NOT accept mp2 audio (eg. Ulead) and will convert it to PCM prior to authoring/burning. PCM audio is uncompressed and HUGE! _IF_ this is happening you might want to convert your audio to ac3.

  4. Ulead DVD MovieFactory 2 will encode your captured video to a DVD-Ready MPEG-2 file.

    Have a look:

  5. use a program like Ulead DVD MovieFactory or any one that you like to make the vob files. then use dvd2one or dvdshrink that free to retranscode it to fit on dvd I use Ulead DVD MovieFactory and dvd2one all the time when I capture movies over satellite tv mst of the time a movie is about 5 to 7 gig's. Also I capture at 8000 cbr and use a Dazzl2 pci card

  6. I believe you are wrong on Ulead not accepting Mp2 audio format from tmpgenc.... Other Ulead my or may not be the same.

I convert all the time with tmpgenc to dvd format from files that cce basic won't do....

I use Ulead MF2 and dig into the settings and
    a. make sure don't convert compliant is checked,\
    b. then go further and choose Mpg audio vs LPCM audio.

MF2 does no conversion on these files.

And of course I'm still on the 30 day trial of Tmpgenc DVD and it seems to be even more tolerant than MF2. If tmpgenc Plus can open it Tmpgenc DVD seems able to handle it too.

    YMMV

  7. I already know how to use tmpgenc...been using it for a while now. I just wondered if there was a better way or different way to do this. I just recorded Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and it's a 5 gig file. Since it's all one file...do I need to break it into a video file and an audio file to resize it with tmpgenc? If so, how? Use dvd2avi?

I recorded it with my ASUS V8200 Deluxe video card using ASUS Digital VCR. The audio and video are one file in a Movie File (MPEG) format. I used MPEG2 format for recording. I have not encoded anything yet...I just recorded the file.

I don't reallly have to calculate the biterate...you can get right at 4.3 to 4.4 gigs on one dvd. If the video and audio are two different files, then you have to take 4.4 gigs and subtract the size of the audio file and make your video file that size...to make it fit.

I use Sonic MyDVD to burn the dvd's with.

I would rather put it on on dvd, instead of using two...if I can keep the quality good enough.

    Thanks all!

  8. Ok, what/how do I do bitrate calculation? I took Harry Potter and re-encoded it with tmpgenc and got the file down to 3.8 gig, but when I go to use Sonic My DVD, it says that the file exceeds 4.7 gigs...go figure that.

When I originally recorded it, asus digital vcr just recorded one large file of audio and video combined...5 gigs. So, I must not be figuring for the audio file...but how do I do that with a single file? Like when I rip a dvd I use dvd2avi and it makes two files.

    Suggestions?

Don't use MyDVD. It re-ecodes your audio as a PCM file which is huge. Iw as using it and now it's inactive on my desktop. Download the demo of Tmpgenc DVD Author, it's a better program and will not re-ecode your mp2 audio.

  12. kenmo,

Ok, I downloaded the trial version of tmpgenc dvd authoring. Now what does this progam do exactly?

This program does not burn a dvd. It only makes a file and saves it to the hard drive and then you have to use something else to burn it with. What else does it require to burn with?

What is the best dvd burning software to use. Everyone says not to use Sonic MyDVD, because of the audio file. So, is Ulead the best?

    Suggestions!

I use Ulead's DVDWorkshop to author my videos. The down side is the cost. If you have around $500 you can get the program and the AC3 add on that allows DVDWS to create ac3 audio with your video production.

Ok, I downloaded and tried DVD Workshop...went through everything and it burned my dvd. When I try and play it on my pc...Power DVD gives this error 'A disc with an unsupported format in drive e:'.

I can see that the disc has been burned to and DVD Workshop showed that there was something like 600 megs free on the disc now.

    Any suggestions?

Ive never experienced that problem. I will check into it further, but most people I know use this product with little or no problems. Also a lot of people on this forum use it as well.

    I'll look further,
