Why not split an mpeg - does this constitute editing...
I have always used vcdcutter and don't notice any difference in the result - in fact I often find that the original mpegs won't play properly with media player, but the splits work fine.
I admit I haven't tried splitting the avi first do you think I should?

  2. I'm not Truman, but I'll try to answer your question anyway.

It is always preferable to do ALL editing in the AVI stage. However, cutting is usually ok, with a few caveats.

In my experience, I've never had any problems cutting standard MPEG-1 for VCDs (i.e., CBR MPEG-1).

However, many people here have spoken of problems with cutting MPEG-2 for SVCD (i.e., VBR MPEG-2) -- so I would probably encode the halves separate if possible.

    Regards.

Do vcdcutter cut to B or P frames too?
Many MPEG editing tools wont do that, so the you can not point the frame exactly.
Actually MPEG "cutting" work by demultiplexing / multiplexing. You'll see the "out of synth" questions here often...
A safe and very comfortable method is to use the source range and encode in several parts (batch encoding).
