  1. I created 2 SVCD files (480 x 576, 25fps, Pal). 1 with CCE & one with TMPGEnc plus...
    CCE: 9pass TMPGEnc: 2pass
Settings (bitrate both CCE & TMPGEnc): Max:2520 Avr: 2520 Min:2520

Results: TMPGEnc is a bit faster (60min) then CCE (75min).
Output TMPGEnc: 76,7MB. Output CCE 77,2MB.

Quality: Both outputs are really smooth if you watch it on PC! On the telly it's much better!

TMPGEnc: Very equal quality between High & Low motion frames!
CCE: Very good quality at Low motion frames... High motion frames have much block noise...

Not much different! I think TMPGEnc is better... I thought CCE gives SVCD the same sharpness as DVD! Or did I do something wrong? Any other high-quality SVCD encoders?

To get better results in CCE when using low bitrates (and SVCD is low bitrate), use an alternate quantize matrix set, the one labeled for low bitrates.

Regarding the speed comparison that you end-up with Tmpgenc a bit faster than CCE is, allow me, incorrect.

Comparing two encoders, one doing nine pass encoding and the other doing 2 pass encoding is wrong. Try them both at 2 pass (as Tmpgenc cannot do more than that), and then you will see how fast each one is. 8) .

Finally, the bitrate selection you have made (min,max,avg=2520) makes the encoding CBR - or constant bitrate. For SVCD I would select max at 2600, avg at 2450 and min at 400. This will improve image quality - as widely and thoroughly discussed in several threads. If you use these settings and repeat the test with both encoders at 2-pass, you will find a slight improvement in Tmpgenc and a slightly larger improvement in CCE. You will also find CCE to encode at least 4 times faster.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.
