  1. Got tired of 2x with my ext pioneer a04 so I bought a liteon 165h. First day things were perfect 4-8x rips no problem. Today I get 1.5 to 3x speeds back and fourth during every rip(tried a couple of diff disks 5,9's)
    I have tried everything:
    Smartripper\DVDdecryptor
Reinstalled aspi (tried a couple of diff versions)
    Turned DMA off and on
    Upgraded to latest firmware 165ch11

Is my drive bad (I doubt it) or is there something I am missing????

  2. Well it will be faster with single layer DVDs than dual layer so maybe that's the reason for the different speeds.

Also I have my LiteON drive installed as a secondary master which seems to work well for me. I get 12 to 15x for single layer and 6 to 8x for dual layer DVDs and this is on a P4-2.53GHz/1GB PC2700 system. Try closing down any programs and services running before ripping.

I should add that I have two LiteON drives a 163 and the 166.

    Ditto Bob,

I get the excact same speeds on my AMD XP2200+/786mb PC2100DDR RAID system, using a LITEON DVD-ROM LTD163D.

The only thing i can add is to make sure the drive is not set in PIO mode, if it is change it back to Ultra DMA mode.

  4. thanks for the tips but still no luck......
I do have it set as the secondary master, dma enabled. Its odd how it works, after you start ripping it first shows a speed of say 3 or 4x then a second or 2 later it shows 1.3x after that it cycles back and forth fast\slow about every 2 secs. The first day I had it worked perfect???

I have also tried many diff dvd's dual and single layer with the same results.

    defective drive.......or setup probs????????

Some discs rip faster than others. I'm too lazy to go into the tech for you, sorry. Maybe somebody else can.

Anyway, I get anywhere from 0.3x up to 17x. It just depends on many factors that all come together during the process.

I'd just try lots of discs before starting to fiddle with settings and ripping out and replacing hardware.
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.

  8. Christ I get 4x on a very old ricoh mp9060. Maybe try installing it again, eg unplug all cables and reinsert them make sure your cables are the ones required (ide cables) as there were "issues" with udma 66 cables only allowing faster hard disks to work in pio mode. try swapping cables with a M8. defrag your hard disk. Re-install win /xp it dont like new hardware!!

thrusday: in the future do this for a MUCH faster fix. Goto the device manager in Windows XP then remove your hard drive controllers, reboot and let them redetect, it will cause the data to be reset and DMA mode to work properly again.

Thanks for the tip, just tried it and it worked. Last time I went as far as uninstalling the DVD drive in the device mgr but not the eide controller. I assumed it was a Windows problem because even my external 1394 dvd drive was horked up and ripping slow.

much easier than a reload of Mr Gates pride and joy

    Thanks again

Am I the only person who can't get this deleting the IDE controllers trick to work?

I have tried several times, but this has no effect on my rip speed. I have a LFD-311 DVD Burner and a 16x DVD Rom. The DVD Rom was a piece of crap that never worked right before finally dying completely. Now, it wont read anything.

Anyway, neither one of my drives ever ripped above 2x. This is driving me nuts!

I've tried everything. Yes, DMA is enabled

I am running Windows 2000 PE with a P4 1.7 on an Intel D850MV motherboard. I am assuming that this is a system issue. I upgraded my CD burner 6 months ago from a 16x to a 40x and I get the same speed as I did with the 16x- Yes I'm using 40x media

I am desperate for answers. This ripping problem is driving me nuts! Any help would be greatly appreciated

  14. Dafoe - what kind of DVD-ROM drive do you have? Most DVD-ROM drives are locked at 2x when it comes to reading/ripping CSS discs (in fact some are locked at 2x max for all DVD video discs). The Lite-on isn't locked (that's why it's so popular).

    Thanks for the tip.

I honestly don't remember what brand the drive was. But, after doing some research I found that it was a CyberDrive DM166D

They sell mostly OEM drives according to the article. It was probably rebagged for another company. I pulled it out of my system a few days ago . What good is a DVD Rom drive that wont read discs? I have been ripping with my burner, but I will try a Liteon.

Is there anyway to unlock these drives?

Well, I went out and bought a Liteon DVD Rom and it wont go beyond 2X

    This is bulls@$*t!!!!

I'm at the end of my rope with this crap. I don't know what else to try.

I called Liteon "tech support" and they let the phone ring for five minutes straight-3 times. Finally, they put on a recording instructing me to leave a message giving my problem, model number, and get this, the serial number. The serial number? Yeah right. I'm just going to return the drive.

Have you installed ForceASPI?Also try connecting DVD-ROM as slave to HDD.
    I average 7.5x rips with my Lite-On LTD-165H.

    Thanks a lot moviegeek,

Before returning the drive I decided to check my IDE channels one last time. For some reason my secondary channel was set to PIO mode. I could sworn that I chjanged both of them.

Anyway, I am now ripping at 4x-8x. I really appreciate the help.

Now, if I can get around to upgrading my 2 year old 1x DVD burner, I'll be all set.
