I just bought a Norcent DP-300 from Wal-Mart for under $50 US. Almost fell for Amazon $10 rebate last night, but $9.15 S&H put it back to $50. With Wal-Mart there is no wait for delivery or rebates and if it doesn't work, I'll just bring it back.
Serial number begins HE113, which makes it the latest, MFG Q1 2003.
The question that bugging me the most is that the zoom icon 2X or 3X, etc. stays on the screen forever with a little white box next to it. Is this normal? Is the unit defective??
First DVD tried had video issues - a short white line on the right above the letterbox image of Harry Potter. Tried going into Menu to adjust video and menu was split and shaking. Selecting PAL and then going back to NTSC or multi seemed to make the problem disappear. Recycled power - Have not seen since.
So far I have tried DVD, SVCD, VCD, MP3 (cd-r), audio discs (cd-R), JPG disks (cd-r), DVD-R and DVD-RW and all seem to work well.
Region hack last posted on DVDRHelp seems to work: Open tray, hit SETUP, bring cursor down to EXIT, press 8888, press NEXT >>: button. New menu option appears at the bottom allowing you to change region to 0.
Also found that PREFERENCE SETUP and TV DISPLAY settups are not accessible while a disk is installed.
Please comment on zoom icon staying on. Do al Norcent DP-300 players do this? Is there a simple way to get rid of it?
