I recently tried to watch Monsters Inc on DVD with a progressive scan DVD player and THX certified $100 Component connectors into a Sony WEGA KV-34XBR800 HDTV and it looked like crap!!! Tried Interlaced mode as well and nothing cleared up the image......most of the picture was perfect but there were a lot of colors and shapes that flicker like crazy and render it unwatchable!! Any suggestions?

Is the player settup to display progressive? I don't think any players do progressive by default, you have to go into settup and tell it to do so.
As I recall, Monsters INC isn't encoded as progressive, it's interlaced.
Little colors and flickers, sounds like a setting with the HDTV is off? Is it 16:9 TV? Monsters INC has 16:9 I think, it might be the TV or the Player crunching it down to 4:3?To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
Yeah the mode on the DVD player is set to Progressive with the component out. The Televesion it 16:9 and I have tried turning on Interlace on both the Player and television to find the same problem! Should I connect a second out through standard S-Video to a non HD connection on the back and then again make sure of all the interlace settings?

I would. I don't think you can set it to progresive and get a decent output, it's not a progressive DVD.

Now how can you tell if a DVD is progressive or not... I was under the impression that all were?

monsters inc was rendered (origanlly) as progressive (of course) as is all animation .. they would have then applied pulldown to it ..

I bought that DVD for my grandson and it played and looked fantastic in my Sony DVD player on my 48 inch widescreen TV.

I bought the DVD as well....However on the Sonx XBR 34inch 16:9 HDTV that I have it flickers....everything else from pixar plays wonderfully.
