i was told to use gspot to check the codec it sayes that i have codec
installed but when i encode with tmpegnc i get no sound or the encoding stops at 38% ne advice on how to use either prog better or y i get no sound i have sound on film befor i encode

have you tried convert the audio to wav and use it as source in tmpgenc?
have you tried "repair" the video source?

Your problem with encoding stopping half way is prolly due to a crappy AVI - Downloaded? If so, a vast majority of the AVIs that you dl off various P2P networks are littered with errors, and have to be scanned for bad frames before processing.
As for audio: Extract the audio track with VirtualDub and decode to a nice wav before encoding with TMPGEnc.
