  1. I have an S-900, upgraded to a Sonnet G3 400, 336 mgs, running 10.1.5, two drives (m/s), and now a Toshiba dvd-rom (1712) on the Sonnet ata 100, and an ati exclaimvr 16 mg video card. The install was puzzling, but that's not the problem now. I'm using the apple dvd player and the playback is totally unacceptable. It skips constantly, whether on half or full screen. I was under the impression that my system was sufficient to play dvd's. Perhaps I was wrong. Do I need a faster processor or video card?
    Thanks,
    Miksis

    • Apple offers their own DVD Player software for use with G3 or G4 PowerMacs equipped with a DVD ROM drive. Other DVD playback solutions may also be available from other manufacturers.

Current versions of Apple DVD Player should be available for download on Apple's website. (Search Release Name for "Apple DVD Player")

Different versions of Apple DVD Player exist for different hardware configurations as follows:

      CPU only
CPU with hardware assistance from a dedicated "DVD decoder" chip

If the system does not meet the hardware requirements for Apple DVD Player, then an error message will result when trying to install.

      CPU only

This method is sometimes referred to as "Software DVD". Under this scheme, all DVD decoding functions are performed by the system CPU (for example, a G4 chip). ATI Rage 128 and RADEON graphics cards may also offer some hardware assistance.

This option typically requires a reasonably fast processor/graphics card combination in order to process and decode the large amount of data in the DVD video stream.

Apple DVD Player 2.2 or higher is considered a "software-only" DVD player and requires a PowerMac G4 with an AGP slot (400 Mhz or faster) or a DVD equipped iMac.

This solution should work using the following graphics cards:

      RAGE ORION
      NEXUS 128
      XCLAIM VR 128
Retail RADEON series graphics card (RADEON MAC EDITION, RADEON 7000 MAC EDITION, etc.)

CPU with hardware assistance from a dedicated "DVD decoder" chip
Using this method, most if not all of the DVD decoding process is offloaded from the CPU to dedicated DVD Decoder hardware.

As with any "hardware assistance" scheme, this can reduce the minimum processor requirement for a DVD-capable system, and/or allow other tasks to be executed concurrently with DVD Playback.

Some G3 and G4 PCI-only PowerMacs offered by Apple included a special DVD decoder daughterboard which connected directly to the graphics subsystem.

These computers MUST use Apple DVD Player version 1.3. The DVD Decoder daughterboard MUST be installed for the DVD Player to work correctly. In Blue and White G3 and G4, the Apple-supplied graphics card and its DVD Decoder MUST reside in the 66 MHz PCI slot.

If the DVD Decoder has been REMOVED from the system or the Apple-supplied RAGE 128 card is NOT installed in the 66 MHz slot, then Apple DVD Player may not launch properly. Additionally, a monitor must be attached to this display at startup.

that said, Id say its 1. lack of processor speed and 2. low memory graphics card.
