  1. I tried to crop .vob in ffmpegx for mencoder xvid encoding, but I always end up with a bad cropping and a black bar hanging at the top. I open the .vob in QT using MPEG2 plugin and export a frame as PICT, open it in GraphicConverter to locate the X and Y coordinate of the top left corner of the movie I wanna crop, enter the WHXY values, being width of the movie, hight of the movie and XY coordinates of the top left corner. I set the Autosize to the proper size of the movie and enter the proper width first in Video Size. I am using 0.0.6m, so just what am I doing wrong?

The crop values are *not* WHXY! The boxes are labelled wrongly in ffmpegX!

After much experimenting, I discovered that the four boxes are actually TBLR values (top/bottom/left/right). They are measured inwards from the image edges, and the distances are in pixels of the original (source) image.

Also, the cropped image will be resized to whatever Video Size you choose, even if the aspect ratio is not preserved. So make sure you enter a Video Size with the same aspect ratio as your cropped image.

  3. TBLR is used for ffmpeg engine, WHXY for mencoder engine.
