  1. I have a German DVD with German and English soundtracks. Of course, the default audiostream is the German one - when you start the movie it will be in German. Since I don't like the dubbing I only want to keep the English soundtrack and stripped out the German one using DVDShrink. But when I start the movie now I have no sound since the default soundtrack is still German and that soundtrack is missing. Though DVDShrink removes the user prohibitions I can't change to the English soundtrack via the remote, I have to go to the language menu and change it there. So my question is:

How can I use IfoEdit to change the default audiostream to English? That way the movie would start with the English soundtrack and I wouldn't have to use the language menu at all.

Open the ifo for the movie in IfoEdit. Up at the top select VTS_PGCITI. If there are multiple PGCs then you will have to hit + to expand it and then select the PGC you want to edit. Highlight that PGC and at the bottom you will see "Audio stream 1 status 32768" and a little below that you will see "Audio stream 2 status and another number." Double click on each of these lines and reverse the numbers. Basically, whichever stream has the number "32768" will play first.

Do this for all relevent PGCs. Hit Save down at the very bottom and test it out.

Thanks! But I just found out that in my special case I actually don't need to change the "first play audio stream" but rather the first play PGC (the movie has one short sequence of japanese talking. When I change the default audio like you described above I get the English version but it has German subtitles in the Japanese scene. So I should better change the PGC that plays first and would have English soundtrack with English subtitles during the Japanese scene. At least I hope so.)

So: How do I change the first play PGC?

I'm a little confused. Are you saying you just don't want that first PGC to play at all? If so, get Vobrator and first try opening up the first vob of the titleset that contains your movie. Select a vob-id and hit the play button at the bottom. Look for this particular Japanese scene and when you find it memorize the titleset (ie: VTS_02 vs VTS_03) and memorize the vob-id it is stored as. You may also have to look in the VIDEO_TS.vob if you can't find it anywhere else.

Now open the ifo for that titleset in IFOEdit and scroll down to the bottom where it says Language Menu Unit 1:

It will list Menu 1:, Menu 2: etc... Find the line that contains the vob-id you memorized. highlight this line and hit the Delete Playback button on the bottom. When you play the DVD it should skip this scene.

Oops, you misunderstood me. Ok - in detail. The DVD is "Austin Powers in Goldmember" which has the japanese scene where the subtitles are pretty funny. I found out that there are 3 PGCs for the main movie. The reason is that seamless branching is used for the subtitles in that scene. They are no "DVD subtitles". The subtitles are in the film itself and the DVD contains the scene twice: one with German subtitles and another with English subtitles. The 3 PGCs are as follows:

    1) German sound and German subtitles during the Japanese scene

    2) English sound with English subtitles during the Japanese scene

    3) English commentary with English subtitles during the Japanese scene

So this isn't a movie where you just can strip out the German audiostream and you are done.

I used IfoEdit to get rid of the seamless branching and just kept PGC 2. But again, when I start the movie I have no sound unless I select the language menu and choose "English". Strangly enough the commentary track is still there but I can't change to the commentary track during the film since the commentary track is a PGC on its own. (which I thought I had removed...)

So my final idea is NOT to strip out the seamless branching (this one scene doesn't take much space) but use ifoedit to change the default PGC. I don't want the movie in German (PGC 1) when I press the start button but in English (PGC 2). I would in addition then strip out the German audiostream completely and lock the language menu with Menu edit.

So how can I change the default PGC?

I don't think its possible to change the default PGC like that. You need to both strip out the other "branches" and keep only PGC 2 (thus leaving you with only the English video part), AND change the default audio stream like I described above (thus making English audio play first.)
