I am trying to extract the sound from an avi file so that I can improve the sound. (I'm copying old Godzilla movies using a ADVC100). Video looks good but action scene sound is loud compared to the talking scenes. I've tried using Goldwave but am unable to succesfully load the file. I open the avi file and after a small period of time it attempts to load the file but it has no audio. Just wondering what I was doing wrong. Need help.

What compression codec is the sound stored at?
Hello. -
Thank you Tommyknocker for the reply. Being new to this I don't know how to find out what you are asking--actually don't understand so please bear with me. I was wondering if that could be my problem. I just used the ADVC to bring in the video and it brought it in as an avi file. That ADVC is so easy to use I thought I had this wooped but just need to work on the sound a little. Thank you for any advice you can offer me.

What you want to do is 'normalize' the sound. That is Soften the loud part and louden the soft part. This is a must for DVD's because the dynamic range is so large.
BeSweet will do this for you, takes a few minutes. To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
I tried BeSweet also. It recognized the avi file but would not open it or convert it to a wav. This is what made me start wondering if I was missing a certain codec or something. The tutorials and everyones input is very helpful and is truly appreciated by this newbie. I feel that if I can ever get Goldwave or BeSweet to open the avi file so I can repair the sound then I'm home. I used TMPEnc to convert the avi to mp2 for DVD creation and it worked great--just need to improve sound.

I've been doing alot of reading trying to figure out my problem and ran across something that I believe may be the source of my problem but I need some help and info from a you fine folks. I'm using MGI Videowave 5.0 to capture, is it possible that it is using type 1 avi and if so as I understand it this is why Goldwave or Besweet can't see any audio file. If this is the case how do I bring it in as type 2 avi. Thank You for your help.
