I found 4x media for the first time in the shops around me. Was looking for -R media, they didn't have any more and only had +R media. This goes to show how many Pioneers have been sold in contrast to SONYs.

Anyway, recorded 3 TDK 4x +R disks, with Nero 5.5.10.28 (switched back to Nero from RecordNow) on the SONY.

Recording was flawless, and fast (16 minutes in contrast to 34 for 2x media). As I always verify the recording, the whole lot took 29 minutes, less than half the time it takes for -R media at 2x. +R media is really faster than -R media overall.

Don't ask about the price. They sell for 4.30Euro each
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

Not having a dvd burner yet (still trying to save up for it) - I always read the posts regading the different formats, in the hope of finding the perfect burner. The thing is, I don't mind if it takes me 2 hours to burn a dvd, as long as it will work in the drives that I want it to work in. So far, I would have to lean towards dvd-r for the greater compatability with standalone dvd players. The time taken to produce the dvd is not really that relevant, unless you are trying to do 10 per day etc.

Not comparing speeds. Just reporting media compatibility. For Nero users, I think it will be interesting to know that v.5.5.10.28+ solves the notorious recording problems with the SONY.

I've been using the TDK 4x +R's from Circuit City and Verbatim 2.4x and 4x from Best Buy. They all have a media code RICOHJPN. I think they're all the same media. They seem to work great in my DRU-500AX so far (knock on wood).
