  1. I finally got what I believe to be a good XVCD. I am capturing at 704 x 480 and then using the resize filter in Virtualdub, set to Presise Bicubic. I frameserve this to TMPEGEnc and set bit rate anywhere from 1800 to 2100 depending if the movie is a 45 min tv episode or I want to squeeze an hour on to the cd.

The quality is great (comparitively), but I am getting slight blurring. I really don't see many macro blocks, or other artifacts, it is just blurry. When they close up on somebody it is fine. But sometimes people are still the focus of the scene and just aren't very close and it is blurry.

Is there a filter I can try to get rid of this, in either virtualdub or TMPEGEnc, preferably VDub because it is faster? Or is there a setting I am missing in TMPEGEnc? Please I am so close, I will be content if I can clear up this blurriness.

    Thanks in advance...

  2. There is a "sharpness" filter in TMPGenc, on the settings, advanced tab. You can move to the frames where you experience "blur" and try it out.

  3. Thanks, I will give that a try tonight. Do you know if this adds a lot of time to the encoding time?

  4. Try using 2pass VBR with max=DVD max, ave=calculator number, min=300~500 below ave. Set motion search to high, turn off detect screen changes.

I would try that before trying sharpen. NOTE - 2pass VBR will double the encode time. TMPGenc will make two passes to encode the MPEG. For best quaility try CCE which can be set for upto 5pass VBR (ie. 6passes, which is normally overkill).
