  1. Hi All,

I agree I had used ADS instant DVD and ati AIW in the past. I receontly got the AverDVD card. The AverDVD card seems to be the easiest, the Video quality seems better (at least than ADS). And the NEO software is FAST ... (if a little weak in the features)

I have the darn audio sync problem.
(which I had with the others .. too)

An interesting point is it seems to be worse with older tapes.

I installed the neoDVD upgrade - and maybe it helped a little but not much

    Some questions?
I had tried,as listed, the "IU" driver but it just got me messed up cause it installed a tuner - which I don't have.
Is there a driver .. that is better than the one on the cd that comes with it?

Also I am using an embedded sound card .. will swapping to a SB 5.1 help?

My hardware is fast (2.4mhz etc.) and bios is updated.

I want to be able to do a single pass - so all these break down split and buil ups don't seem like a great solution for me.

    Another ? a bit different.
Are you able using the latest neoDVD standard to create automatic chapters WHILE doing the direct one step to DVD process?

    Thanks
    Allen

I have this card and love it, but I haven't figured out a way around the sync problems and still use the NeoDVD capture app.

I find that if I capture to .avi with iuVCR, Huffyuv codec, and then reencode with TMPGEnc, I get better results and much tighter sync.

yes, it takes a lot longer - so if I'm recording a documentary with voice over, or a silent film with score (i.e. something that doesn't need a super-tight audio sync) I can go straight to mpeg, but for anything with dialog, I capture avi and reencode.

I haven't had a chance to test this card with PowerVCR or WinDVD Recorder yet, maybe this weekend. Anybody get good results with those apps and this card?

  3. I have this card, and love it. It is the best 50bucks I've ever spent. I can't help with the NeoiDVD prob as I never even loaded that. I use Intervideo's WinDVR, it came the full version that is, it came with a cheap K-World USB Tv tuner I bought at a pc show. It is great when used with this card I get incredible caps capping directly to mpeg2, and knock on wood have never had an audio synch problem with it. You might try WinDVR intervideo does have a demo available. It has many quality presets and resolution presets. The only thing some poeple don't like like is though the Video Bitrate is adjustible you are limited to CBR, you don't have a VBR option with it, but the ease of use and quality is really great. You also only get Mpeg1Layer2 as audio but the BR is adjustable up to 384 so you can get good audio quality, alot smaller than the pcm wav that Neo uses.

With the Neo Standard (& AverDVD card) I do not get sync issues, unless I clip the beginning of a MPEG movie (chapter), I can clip the end just fine.

I have found the best VHS-C to DVD quality is using the Best setting (720x480, it is around 8000kbps with PCM audio). It is an easy to use program, fast and pretty much one step encode to disk. I haven't purchased the Plus package which offers AC3 audio, (not sure I will).

The only downside is the short amount of video on 1 DVD (1 hr. 17 min. per manual). Even if I demux MPEG2 and author with IFOedit (MP2 audio), it is tight to get 1 hr. 30 min. on 1 DVD. I know I can lower the bitrate or use DVDShrink or DVD2ONE, but I see quality loss with these options. I may stick with using more DVDs (especially for home video conversions) and start breaking out different scenes for authoring from the VHS tape. I have tried 352x480 but again I see video quality loss to 720x480.

I also have WinDVR2, and aside from more bitrate options I am not sure it has better quality capture than NeoDVD. It is also a good program, I especially like the ability to schedule recording (start time) from satellite which Neo doesn't offer. It is convenient to record Survivor to hard drive and play back directly to TV from the PC.

I did try the BTwincap driver and since it did not have a specific AverDVD listing, I used the Btspy utility to install them. It allowed me to use my camcorder in Netmeeting with this card, but I also got flickering in VHS captures, I went back to the included drivers and the flickering ended. Not sure why. I would like the Netmeeting to work, but not at expense of capture quality.

Both are good programs, and the card a good value.
