if u record a film off dvd an encode as mpeg it will be about 800 megs, and fit onto 2 vcds, but the same length of film in avi(divx) when converted to vcd takes up 8 vcds. is there anyway to recompress the file into mpeg so itll only take up two vcds?

    VCD {b]is{/b] mpeg - mpeg1.
Only thing that determines file size is duration of movie, and what bitrate it's encoded at. This is true for all mpegs, mpeg1 (VCD), 2(SVCD & DVD) and 4 (DivX/XviD/ASF)
Lower resolution can be encoded at lower bitrates. Higher resolution (=more pixels per frame) requires a higher bitrate to look good.
VCD has the lowest resolution, and requires the lowest bitrate - 1150 kbps video. This gives you about 80 min video on one CD.
SVCD has a higher res, and the bitrate can be "anything" up to about 2500 kbps
DivX is more efficient, so lower bitrates can be used, while still producing decent output at higher resolutions.

I'd recommend reading some guides, and "what is".

  3. answer is bitrate, and divx is dif to vcd format, divx is still avi, where vcd is either mpg1 (vcd) or mpg2(svcd)

if you want to put the film onto a single cd as an avi then its ok, dvd2avi can compress it to fit

do you want to watch it on yer dvd player, if so then it need to be converted to mpg file,

    www.data-uca.150m.com/vcdencoding.doc

i wrote this for me mate and works ace

when ripping a dvd, you will poss get a file/s size of around 5-8 gig
dont worry about that file size, the things to remember is movie length time, and aspect ratio (normally 16:9, i.e. widescreen)

dvddecrypter is the job to use, it rips the vob files (dvd files) to yer comp
then use dvd2avi to save the vobs as a "project" that tmpgenc understands

then load up tmpgenc and load the project and use the above link to convert

any probs email me at mat_stuff@hotmail.com

and i will try to help further

i have successfully converted dvds' to 1 and 2 cd's wiht ace quality results
