  4. I like my D-Link DI-604 router -- four ports, advanced hardware firewall, create DMZs, block sites -- makes me feel all safe and warm...

It's $49.99 at Best Buy, where there's also a $10 rebate on it right now.

All 3 of your PCs can't use the same IP address, the Router uses the IP address given to your by comcast (usually DHCP based) to talk to the internet and probably 192.168.1.1 to talk to your internal network. Your 3 pcs are using 3 internal addresses (like 192.168.1.2 thru 4, probably given to the 3 pcs via DHCP on the router) And all request from the PCs foward to the router to the internet.

As for recommendations, the Linksys units are nice as well.

  6. Comcast policy is simple. You are on your own.

Yes, routers work just fine and you only need the one IP address.

I have had a Linksys router for 3 years and never a problem with 3 computers.

Once Comcast walks away from the setup (or you do a self setup) without a router, you can always add a router (you may or may not have to do it by "Cheating".) That is done by mirroring the Hardware address (MAC Address) of the original Network card connecting to the cable modem you were originally setup with and making the router connect to the modem and imitate that hardware address (you usually want to retire the original network card with the imitated hardware address to avoid conflicts).

But Comcast like other providers may not care and just placing the Router on the network may work or calling up tech support and giving them the routers hardware address.

If you "Cheat" (may not have any other choice) to get the router working, you may have to reconfig your hardware back to the old way to get tech support. Not with Comcast but another provider, when they found out I was using a router they said "sorry can't help you" even though it had nothing to do with my end. Had to reconnect the modem to the original network card in order to get tech support help me at all.

    Lemme ask these questions:

1.) Will I need a software firewall anymore?

2.) How much control of the router will i have? will i be able to map ports and assign static ips?

My friend uses comcast w/ a dchp router n he has problems. I'd like a router were i can assign each computer a static IP and the router uses DCHP to get the IP from comcast

3.) Will my use of fire sharing and direct im in aim be hurt?

4.) I will be able to create a network between my 2 computers and share files right?

  9. 1) In theory, you don't need a software firewall, but of course, that depends on how you run your router, and whether or not you want to limit applications on your computer from "calling home". If you want to stop "calls home", you still need a software firewall. If you use the DMZ feature or turn off some of the firewalling features of the router, you may still need a software firewall. Normally not though.

    2) YOu can definitely map ports in all the routers I've run - normally I punch 20 and 21 for FTP.

2b) This is how I prefer to run - I give each computer on my net a fixed address - that way there's no guessing.

    3) You can definitely do filesharing between your computers. Just make sure that you're router is defined to not allow NetBios/IP into your network from the outside (was a checkbox on my linksys router).

    P.S. I don't know about direct IM - don't use IM myself.....

So the router will come with a list of IP's I can assign or do i just make one up?

    edit-
how do u configure the router.

  11. TYpically, the way you set up a router for a local network at home where you want fixed IP addresses is to set the router's address to 192.168.1.1.

You set the subnet mask to 255.255.0.0, and you assign your
PCs to 192.168.1.x, where x is from 1 to 254..... (the reason is that 192.168.x.x are assigned to "private addresses".

The router will just "find" them as it needs to. If you use any other sets of number than 192.168.x.x (or 10.x.x.x, but that's another story), then you're going to have connectivity problems (all your data will actually go to somebody else).

Most people just leave Windows and the router @ default, in which cause the router will assign each PC an address as it boots, and you don't worry about what the address is.

I got my 14 dollar router and set it up.

1.) It cannot maintain Fast Ethernet (100megs) over the 100ft cable that connects my laptop to the router. I have to run at 10.

    2.) I have my IP's set to 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3 (static IP's)

How do I configure my router so I can use Internet Information Server through it, I tried but i cant because the IIS only sees 192.168.0.2 as the IP n the firewall blocks any attempts to access that.

Is there a setting in the router i have to change or can I not use IIS.

I have to iniate direct ims, the firewall does a push.

  15. When I first bought my Linksys it couldn't get on the web. I had to update the bios first . After I did that I didn't have any more problem.
