  1. Ok heres the deal, I downloaded these .mpg files, it took me ages to find out what they were cos Xing, Windows Media, wouldnt play them.
Then I downloaded Elecard MPEG2 Player which played the files, so im guessing there MPEG2.
Now I want to put these files onto VCD, the thing is about a year ago I downloaded TMPGEnc and now it says my MPEG-2 trail period has expired.

So im now wondering what shall I use to convert them, and also this is probably a dumb question but do I need to convert them?, its says on one of the tables i came across that SVCD(?) is MPEG2. Well im confused. Can someone help me out?

  2. If they are mpg files you can burn them straight to vcd. However you will need to edit them to change aspect etc......

I would try burning them first to vcd, if you are satisfied happy days, if not post back 8)

Er... If they are MPEG2, as you suspect, try creating an SVCD (Use VCDEasy to author!). TMPGEncs trial period is about encoding to mpeg2, not reading mpeg2, which TMPGEnc can't do natively. But with the help of some mpeg2 decoder (like the one that's installed with PowerDVD...) it reads mpeg2 no problems.

  4. k so after d/lin VCDEasy...I think they need to be converted from MPEG2 to MPEG1, is there a tool that does that apart from TMPGEnc?

If your DVD player plays SVCD's then you do not need to convert. Simply use VCDEasy to burn it in SVCD format.

If your player only plays VCD's then you can try the Header Trick, here: http://www.vcdeasy.org/modules.php?name=_Guides&id=VcdTrick

TMPGEnc should be able to do that even though the trial period has expired for Mpeg2 encoding. If that doesn't work, then TMPGEnc should still be able to encode from Mpeg2 to Mpeg1. You will need the TMPGEnc Mpeg2 plug-in, which is available in the Tools section. Here's a guide: https://www.videohelp.com/tmpgenc.htm

Try these three methods in the order listed b/c encoding down to VCD should be your last choice. If you really want a different encoder than TMPGEnc (it's one of the best), check in the Tools section.

    Good luck! 8)
