I brought thisd drive recently and was wondering should i upgrade the firmware to 2f at present its 2c. I saw couple of posts of people not being able to burn 4x speed and thought does my current 2c falls in it as well. I live in Aus and cant find 4x dvd+r anywhere at the moment.

Also burnt a movie dvd2one-copy2dvd and the sony burner light was blinking. Is this normal? Does the light stay on until the burn is finished?

I f the above prob is buffer under run related culd it be the copytodvd burn engine and if yes should i disable it in the device manager or do i have to reinstall the software?

    thanks

  2. I have the same burner as you and, also have the same firmware revision (2.0C) which is what was installed on the drive at purchase. Frankly, I would not recommend a firmware update if things are working properly. Besides, if you cannot find the proper media to purchase and burn, then an update is useless. (I can wait 15 minutes more for a properly burned disc with no burn-related errors.)

The light blinking on the drive is normal. It's letting you know that it's doing its' thing which is burning! I doubt the DRU-500AX is suffering from a buffer underrun, unless your discs are not being completely or properly burned. The DRU-500AX has an 8 meg cache which is the largest cache of all current DVD burners.

There is an old American adage which states "don't fix it, if it ain't broken." I repeat this to myself everytime I get tempted to change some settings or download an update (which sometimes hampers relatively problem-free software by introducing new bugs). If everything is working fine, I would just leave it be.

    Hope this helps you out!

hmmm well i wanted to know if the burner actually lights the light continiously for normal burnning and blinks to show that the buffer is lacking data(Lossles linkning) like other cdrw drives.
Also someone let me know if buffer lacks data due to the copy2dvd burning engine

I have the 500AX too at default 2.0C, and I'm not upgrading as it works at the moment. I live in Brisbane and 4x media is still relatively expensive. Ritek G04 4X don't burn at 4x only 2x. Itried Pioneer and Verbatim 4x and they work fine, burning at 4x. Princo 4x only at 2x. The drive only likes better media it seems. I hve a mixture of media at the moment.

Same here, it always blinks during the burning process.
