  1. I'm very interested in getting a DVD-rom for my PC to start ripping and would like to find out what people think are the best ones to take a look at. I know that there are some inexpensive drives, but I have no idea if price equals quality. My system is a Dual P3 750 with 1.5 g of PC133 ram running Win2K. I would imagine that I should't have any type of compatibility issues. Any comments would be appreciated, I want to make sure that I have good tools before I start.

  3. I have a SCSI Pioneer DVD-305S, this drive rocks hard. I recommend this to anyone. As far as bare computer parts, I recommend getting the Tyan Thunder K7 (S2462), it's a Dual AMD Athlon MP motherboard supporting 1GHz - 1.2 GHz each processor, and 3GB of PC2100 RAM and other goodies. Check out http://www.tyan.com/products/html/thunderk7.html.

    That motherboard starts at $339.
2 AMD Athlon MP (Palomino) 1.2 GHz processors for $158 each. (Beware the differences, MP = multi-processor, it makes a difference)
    512 MB of PC2100 RAM, $29 each.

Just get your other things, I suggest a GeForce 2 MX or something, the 3 is still too expensive. Then you'll be well on your way. You'll especially thank me for that choice of motherboard. You can't go wrong with onboard dual ethernet and SCSI ports, among other goodies on the board.

  5. Thanks for the advice, I'm going to order the Pioneer 116 next week and start the fun! I don't have a SCSI motherboard, I have a Tyan S2507D. I'm in the process of building my first AMD machine, I bought a 1GB Athalon with a Tyan Trinity KT S2390B and I'll put 1GB of RAM in.
