  1. Hello,

Which ATi and Nvidia graphic cards are fast enough to run latest DX8.1 and DX9 games at:
    - Maximum quality (anti-aliasing, etc) settings
    - 1024x768 32bit 85Hz Resolution
    - 30fps

Do I really need latest card from ATi/Nvidia? How long will those cards last, I mean will they be able to run DoomIII at those specs/settings? My system specs are P4-2.26Ghz/512MBPC3000/WDJB800.

    Thanks for any suggestions!

  2. The ATI 9700 Pro will serve you nicely. Its the fastest card on the market right now, next to the 9800Pro. The performace increase between the 9700 and the 9800 doesn't justify the price difference. I'd suggest you stay away from nvidia's fx series since the cooling system is incredibly loud(70db).

  3. I believe the ATI 9500 pro is a lower cost DX9 card with performance slightly below that of the 9700 pro.

    What are you talking about...
The 9800 kicks the 9700's ass...

  5. The 9800 is faster than the 9700, but I think the 9700 is a better value. The 9800 is about $150 more than the 9700, but the performance gain is not by a large margin.

  7. Don't get an 9500, they suck. This should give you all the information you need http://www.athlonxp.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Diner_Wrapper&file=index&req=ShowF..._shootout.html ... usually the 9800 preforms about 8fps higher... but that is just an average. I would get an 9700 for FSAA and AA. Don't get an FX... their image quality sucks and its loud and a little overpriced. No I'm not a fanATIc, I have a geforce card in my comp right now... I just like the best hardware. Goodluck on your purchase. I find that newegg.com usually has fast shipping and low prices.

    no.. not necceserally..

The 9500 is just a capped 9700. there are modding sites an u can mod ur 9500 to be a 9700, its something about opening the 4 remaining pipe lines. Its also cheaper...

  9. The mod changes it to a regular 9700, not a Pro version. It only works with the regular 9500 128mb version with the Red PCBs. It also requires that you know how to solder it together. The new 9500s come with the black PCBs and cannot be overclocked like that(obviously they found out people were doing this). Even if you do managed to do that, there are issues with artifacts appearing when running games at high settings.

Its just less of a hassle to get a 9700 or a 9700Pro, since the price is only around $250 for a non-pro or $300 for a Pro version.

Acutally I was supprised at the GeForce 4 4600, It managed to perform better than the FX 500 in some tests. But it wasnt far behind. Compared to the 9700 and 9800 it was halfway there on the bar graph

But if u want to play Doom 3 with out lagging, get the 9700 or the 9800
