Well i got my new system formatted the 120Gb Hd NTFS and installed Xp on it. I have my old p3 which i was using till now and have a 80GB on it which is formated fat32 with a lot of stuff on it. Now i thought that fat32 is readable in ntfs Xp and not the other way round. So i pulled out the fat32 formatted harddrive 80Gb and wacked in the the new system. The new system recognises it but when i double click it, winxp asks me if i wanna format the harddrive as its not formatted. That scared me so i put the hard drive back into its own p3 case and booted fine, now my problem is how do i copy over about 17GB of files over to the new system?????

thanks in advacne for any help

It is not a standard formatted disc. You probably used some drive-install utility on it, and it's not really there unless in the EXACT SAME computer it was put into. Complex to explain.

EZ Drive is what WD uses. Maxtor has something too. What brand is it? When did you put it in? How did you do it?

You'll probably have to reformat it to put it in the new system. Don't take my word on that, new ways of gettings around such things pop up a lot these days, though I doubt it in this case.

Just network the two systems. You can get two ethernet cards (NIC) for $10 each or less, and then a cheap 10/100 switch (also has 2-port HUB) for $15. I have that running between my two main systems.

Bought it all at Fry's (and outpost.com)
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.

Convert should work fine ..... (Start/Help/NTFS) but you can just buy a crossover network cable and 2 net cards with no hub or switch if you don't plan on going beyond 2 systems, and then copy the data over. Then convert the old system to NTFS for some peace of mind before you move the drive over.

Thanks for the quick reply guys

    My new system

    Intel P4 2.5Ghz
    Gigabyte Ga8inxp
    512MB DDR Ram 333Mhz
    Sony Dvd+-Rw Drive
    Canopus ADVC 1394
    Western digital 8mb Cache 120GB

I have gigabit ethernet oin the new system motherboard and have a cheap nic for the old pc which only supports 10/100(i hope this is ok) funny thing is forgot to buy the cross over cable, will get it tommorrow.

I did manage to get the data to the new drive using an almost run down disk whcih i had in my "too used to be of any use cabinet". All i wanted urgently from that drive at the moment is to install winxp sp1 whcih was on that drive but turns out it was the only file whcih is corrupt, rest are fine. Oh well download sp1a again using my 56k connection
The main rreason i brought my pc was video capture and backup and edit etc but witht the
Canopus ADVC 1394 card i am not really happy, i hooked up my vout from my vcr to this card and captured clips dvd quality in videostudio but when i played it back it was a bit pixelated. . I should be asking this in another forum but does the picture come out pixellated in your captures, also when i played and viwed properties of this cap clip in wmp8 it does not seem to know what kind of clip it is. Virtualdub gave me some kind of error as well(unless virtualdub is not able to read mpeg2,is it?)

    thanks again guys

Try capturing a small avi test clip with VirtualDub at 720x480 instead of VideoStudio for capture and see if the pixelation goes away. I know if I use "MyDVD" for capture the results are horrible ...... like blown up newsprint (very large dots).

In some cases an imported HD from another computer need to be re-formatted for it to work and to be compatible with the system.

An imported hard drive can get really slow to access due to being from another system. So, re-formatting is the way to go and on to NTFS.

A hard drive from an older computer in a different OS is an example of a problem and no guarantee the drive will work without any error or a crash.
