What software? Mine just burnt a Memorex at 8X using Ashampoo 6 burning engine. That drive needs a firmware update but none has been released up to now. Verbatim 16X will only recognize as 4X. Try some other discs and see if you get faster burning speeds.

Try different media. If the H22L doesn't recognize the media you're giving it (and Fuji is notorious for switching manufacturers/media so no 2 spindles are truly the same), it defaults to 4X to burn it.

And I agree with oldfart13, the drive desperately needs a firmware update. It would be an incredible drive if a few minor points were addressed.

Unfortunately there is no firmware update for the LG H22L drive yet. Although I read at CdFreaks.com that someone flashed the drive with the LG H22N firmware. The flash worked but it killed the lightscribe tech.

Use VERBATIM OR TAIYO YUDEN dvd media with the drive. Preferably VERBATIM DVD+R media. I owned a LG H22L for about a month then I sold the drive in a computer that I upgraded for someone. IMHO the LG H22L is not the best drive out in the market right now. LG isn't a fav of mine since I had to RMA (4) LG H22N drives back to NEWEGG. No matter what brand/media id I used on the drive it would take 10 minutes or more to burn at 8x, 12 & 16x spds. Just the luck of the draw I guess. Poor quality control happens with every dvd burner manufacturer.

  6. I got same problem with this drive. Sony DVD+R and Maxell DVD-R discs (16x compatible) only recognized as max. 4x, but to TDK DVD-R discs i can burn with 16.1x speed.

These discs seems to work fine with H22L: http://www.amazon.co.uk/TDK-DVD-R47CBED25-6-DVD-R-16x-25pack/dp/tech-data/B000CR73VU/r...328433-0118831

You might check with NeroInfo tool to confirm that your problem is that there is no firmware write strategy for the media you are using.

It will tell you the supported speeds. If it shows a speed higher than 4x, you have another problem.

Yea...from what I've read that is one piss-poor LG drive. I won't be upgrading my old LG's any time soon I can tell you that....at least not with that LG.

The Matsushita chipset based LG's have been problematic lately. The Renasas chipped models like the new H42N hopefully will remain solid but only time will tell.

  10. Is this problem with H22L fixable by firmware? If there's gonna be one...?

I checked with NeroInfoTool and it shows 4x write speed to Maxell disc. To TDK is shows 16x. Both are DVD-R and 1-16x discs.

I own it and it just flies (Verbatim, Sony media). It must be your IDE channel issue: cabling, settings, DMA etc. Definitely the best drive on the market among 16x. Don't blame the drive, fix your PC.

I agree. Use best media you can get, if still slow... you know.

btw are you using a 40 wire ide cable? if you are that could be why your burn speeds are only 4x. your drive would be in UDMA 2 mode with burn speeds of 4x. buy a flat ribbon 80 wire ide cable then check DMA mode to see that it's in UDMA 4 mode.
