NEW YORK (AP) -- Isaac Hayes has quit "South Park," where he voices Chef, saying he can no longer stomach its take on religion.

Hayes, who has played the ladies' man/school cook in the animated Comedy Central satire since 1997, said in a statement Monday that he feels a line has been crossed.

"There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins," the 63-year-old soul singer and outspoken Scientologist said.

"Religious beliefs are sacred to people, and at all times should be respected and honored," he continued. "As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices."

"South Park" co-creator Matt Stone responded sharply in an interview with The Associated Press Monday, saying, "This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology... He has no problem -- and he's cashed plenty of checks -- with our show making fun of Christians."

Last November, "South Park" targeted the Church of Scientology and its celebrity followers, including actors Tom Cruise and John Travolta, in a top-rated episode called "Trapped in the Closet." In the episode, Stan, one of the show's four mischievous fourth graders, is hailed as a reluctant savior by Scientology leaders, while a cartoon Cruise locks himself in a closet and won't come out.

Stone told The AP he and co-creator Trey Parker "never heard a peep out of Isaac in any way until we did Scientology. He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin."

He hasn't been shown too much lately anyway.

Very funny, but won't be missed too much.

I also wonder why people think things are so funny and okay to talk about other people, but when it hits themselves they aren't laughing anymore. South Park hacked on religions, racial views, sexual preferences, several physical disabilities, and even mental disabilities. They've been a lot more harsh to other religions.

In all honesty, nothing has been said up until recently, so he's probably received heat from the sect itself for being a part of the group that caused insult. And now he's trying to save face for the religion.

Scientology is by far not a religion. More of a science fiction story with a huge budget.

yeah but hypothetically if I was to say Scientology is complete bullshit then that could potentially cause the same grief as saying there isn't a God etc

I'm outta this thread anyway as I don't want to know about Scientology either as I've seen a little description on the Scientolog site and I'll keep my thoughts about it to myself 8)

It's nothing major. It's just a bunch of people who wear funky pyramids on their heads and stare into the sky more often than they look in a mirror.

Am I confusing them with academically super advanced Mensa. Oh wait, it's the same thing.

That's pretty ******* hypocritical of him.

I almost thought he left a couple of seasons ago. He's not as integral a character as he was the first couple of seasons.

I think originally they wanted Barry White, but he refused.

Chef is actually more similar to Barry White in his look and singing style.

    From cult watch

The modern definition of "Cult" refers to any group that uses manipulative psychological “Mind Control” techniques to recruit and control their members.
I've personally seen the book that is the precursor to Dianetics. Its filled with basic brainwashing through and through. From trying to get you to repeat things over and over again up to trying to get you to redefine words of your own language to their new slightly change definition.

The US govenment won't let them be listed as a religion unless something has changed, and the German government has been burned by them so badly they wont even have business dealings with companies connected to them.

And....... I could point out multiple examples similar if not identical things about religious groups but don't want to go into the "breaking the forum rules" area so I'll leave it at that.

BTW, I'm pretty non-religious non-cult... I just sit back and take it all in...
