I have a movie in MP4 format which cannot view by Mplayer on my Mac.
I use ffmpegX to convert it to AVI. The video is good but no sound.
The audio on the mp4 movie is aac, 22050 Hz, stereo.
I try to save the audio file to Movie to M3 and ac3 still no sound.
    Anyone can help me please
    Thank you

Probably it is he aac, you are just not decoding the SBR part so you only get half sample rate.

mplayer supports aac decoding via libfaad which is internal so I didn't think you could compile without it.

ffmpeg should be able to convert aac in an mp4 to AC3 fine.

    Thank you

If the aac is only 2 channel you could convert to mp3, if it is 5.1 you could convert to AC3.

You might also want to check out mp4box for extracting streams from mp4's.

If you are doing all this on a Mac, then you might want to check the listing for the Mac OS in 'Tools.' Also, we have a Mac forum here on this site.

If instead these are all PC questions, just ignore me.

    AAC=Apple Audio Codec.
My guess is that this is a Video purchased
at the Apple Store, and you want to know how to
convert the audio to something usuable?

Your only recourse is to re-record it, either by using
Wiretap or Audio Hijack Pro, both audio recording apps
( I use AHP, but the following instructions are the same for both apps).

    You simply:
    1. Open Quicktime Player, then open the video file.
    2. Open up the audio recording software.
    3. Make the audio recording software "hijack"
the application that will be playing the audio,
    in this case Quicktime Pro.
    4. Select a destination and naming convention for the file
    5. Hit record on the audio app.
    6. Hit play on Quicktime Player.

When QTp is done playing the WHOLE file, it will have
recorded the audio to the new format you chose.

    Hi, terryJ
Thanks for yor step by step instruction but I don't have QT Pro, I have it on my Classic environment but not OSX and it won't play mpg-4.
If I have QT player 6, is there a way that I can download some codec to play mpg-4?
Or is there any freeware to extract the audio track from mpg-4?
    Thank you

If you're on a Mac, and you want to watch h.264 content AND possibly convert to another format, there's really no way around it but to get QTPro (7). It's only $29US.

BTW, AAC = Advanced Audio Coding. (No alleigance to Apple).

ICBW, but anything purchased at the Apple store would be playable by QT7 (and possibly applicable/downloadable plugin codecs). Sounds like it might come from somewhere else...

AFAIK, HE-AAC ("High Efficiency") isn't supported by QT7, only LD(?)-AAC ("Low Delay"). But I thought HE-AAC was supported by mplayer/ffmpegX.

    What about VLC?

Its not the $29, I am running OSX 10.34, I have heard that QT7 cause a lots of problem and I don't want to upgrade to 10.39 because a lots of my older software won't work if its higher than 10.35

Qt 7 does cause problems, but the severity of it depends on the iteration you choose. If you upgrade all the way to QT 7.03, you will lose AC3 support. If you upgrade to QT 7.01, it can play havoc with the Pro Apps
(FCP, DVDSP) on a 10.39 system.

if you must run 10.39, try to go QT 6.53, or QT 7.02.

Most older software has come forward, to run in at least 10.39?
What do you have that is holding you back?

Software like Dreamweaver 4, fetch 3.0.3 etc.
Do it has to be QT Pro, can you add the codec to just QT player?
    Thanks

Dreamweaver MX runs in 10.39 and is readily availalbe for pennies on the dollar now ( legit upgrades to Macromedia
Studio 8 , which also includes Flash 8, can be had for less
than $300), replacing your old Dreamweaver 4.

Fetch 3.03---I ditched this in favor of Captain FTP, but Fetch 5.04 for OS X is out.

I try to spend as little money as I can, the software I have are good enough for what I need. To be hornest, lots of new features in the upgrade are not that useful or necessary.
Anyone can suggest a freeware to play mp 4 with sound on Mac?
    Thank you

unfortunately, without spending a bit of money to
move up to OSX 10.39 and or QT 7 to decode,
    no.
