  1. I have been looking on the net for a free Ipod encoding software. I have found a couple, but they are not free.

The Ipod just uses mp4 and there has always been plenty of free mp4 tools. XviD, libavcodec, x264 for video encoding, faac and lame for audio encoding, gpac, mpeg4ip and bento4 for muxing.

For an all in one type package, check out MeGUI.

  4. I dowmloaded the program. It looks almost exactly like PSP Video 9. So the PSP and Ipod play the same format of video? MP4? Is there any "standard prefered settings that the Ipod requires to play?

Yes, both the PSP and ipod play mp4. The PSP requires some custom atoms though which the iPod doesn't and the PSP supports main profile AVC, whilst the iPod supports only baseline profile.

Most of the free apps are ffmpeg front ends, so there are bound to be some similarities.

  6. OK, right now I am using the Videora Ipod Converter. I notice various MP4 settings with different bitrates, and various H264 settings with different bitrates. I am making videos (which I have created myself) to distribute on CD at my website. I want to make my videos available in both PSP and IPod formats. Can anyone tell me what settings I need for Ipod, and what settings in need for PSP. Does PSP take the H264? or MP4 settings? And IPod take the H264? or MP4 settings? I want to make sure the videos work for my customers.

For the PSP you need to run atom changer. No idea if an iPod will play the resulting mp4. You also need to use some kind of weird filenaming scheme.

Both the iPod and the PSP support the mp4 container, although with the above restrictions for the PSP. They also both support h.264 (AVC), however as I said for the PSP you are restricted to main profile and baseline profile for the iPod. There are also resolution restrictions. Both also I believe support SP MPEG-4.
