EDIT: Apologise to mods for the work. Thanks for moving this to the correct forum.

I have just started to seriously use DVD+R DL to backup using Imgburn v2.

After my first 5 successful DL ISO/burns... a snag.

Imgburn cannot find a suitable layerbreak. When I remove some extra material - and believe me when I say a difficult choice - Imgburn only allows cell 29. On review = not a suitable choice because of panning action from previous cell into that cell. On fast inspection... cell 30 would be great but I don't know if I can set it there manually and still be in compliance.

I have vobblanker - which in the past I have strictly used on episodic DVD's to split into SL. I know I should be able to split cell 29 but frankly there are no spectacular places within it that won't be noticable.

I have just started the google searching in this site and I'm still looking for a guide or solution. Any help pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated.

EDIT: (Sigh) Seems I'm not the only one with the issue. I will see what pcgedit can do tonight.

Try creating the ISO with PgcEdit and see what this program offers you for a suitable break.

    EAO,

I take it your project is close to the capacity of a DL disk? Unfortunately, the fuller a DL disk is, the smaller the useable layer break area, which limits your options. If the disk is really full, you may not even be able to find a suitable layer break at all, which sounds like what you're up against.

If you still have a copy of the dvd the way you originally wanted it, with no available layer break, you can open it in PgcEdit, and go to the layer break window. It should pop up an error message that says it can't find a suitable layer break. In the error message popup, look in the section that starts with "Note for expert users:". It will suggest which cell to split. It might be a different cell than 29.

If PgcEdit recommends you split cell 29, about all you can do is just split cell 29 using the "Split Cell" function in VobBlanker, choosing the best place possible. If you really want to use cell 30, you can try splitting it instead, but make sure you experiment on a duplicate of the VIDEO_TS directory, because it probably won't work.

Twice now I've been unhappy with setting the layer break on a disk, no matter what I tried. Sometimes layer breaks, like life, aren't perfect, and you just do the best you can.

    Vegasbud and Rvelez:

Thanks for the input. Started to use Pgcedit. Neat program. And it has been a fun learning curve. Finally got that DL written to disc and the layer break worked out.

Yup my discs can be near capacity.

I had the added misfortune of having the new DVD writer go defective while sorting this out. Defective in the working sense so you didn't know if the burn failure was me/software or from hardware. Took about 5 DL coasters to sort out.

When I was finally satisfied that it was the writer I got an LG GSA-H10L from BB as a fast desperate emergency replacement. It has been a great writer so far. No DL failures since. I have never had a burner that would not really drop off in speed - like from 4x to 1x - when shifting layers. This beast hardly 'blinks'. I burn mostly Verbatim DL MKM 001 at 6x and this writer will maybe fall to 5.6x before going back up to 6x. They other incredible thing is the buffer in imgburn stays at 100% on every DL burn I have made (6) with it . Never saw that before.

Thanks again for helping me get it all sorted out.
