  1. Can someone (especially if youve used both) give me pros and cons of each of these 2 Auth., programs? Im trying to decide which one i want.
Also is there a good guide on making high quality dvd menus(motion as well) or do the 2 programs i mentioned do that as well.

    Here's my 2 cents:

They are both "Advanced" authoring packages.

    DVD WorkShop 2.x
    -very easy-to-learn interface (user friendly)
    -motion menus/buttons
-advanced features like playlists, multiple audio streams, subtitles
-builtin video and audio encoder, and accepts a lot of different input types
-Dolby Digital Audio (2-channel stereo) encoding
    -fully customizable menus
-great library of menu templates, buttons, objects, overlays, etc...
-plugin available for PhotoImpact to create custom menu templates
    -realtime preview of video+audio
-realtime preview of finished dvd structure
-better burning engine included with software (get latest patch)
    -can create VCD/SVCD/DVD discs
-can set the flags for CSS and Macrovision -- although you have to send the DLT image to a replicator for stamping on your final dvd's -- and how strong are these protection shemes anyway

DVD LabPro (development of version 2.0 is underway, which will add more features)
-steeper learning curve than DWS 2.x
    -motion menus/buttons
-advanced features like playlists, multiple audio streams, subtitles
-no builtin encoder (but offers plugins for video and audio at a resonable cost)
-fully customizable menus -- but templates aren't as slick as DWS (imho)
-can import chapter list for video assets
-scripting support (can create some cool effects like "switched" menus -- but you can do the same thing in DWS, just would take longer)
-burning engine included, but doesn't work with as many burners as the DWS 2.x burning engine
    -access to VM commands **
-specify remote navigational control (up/down/left/right) **
-Prevent User Operations during playback (like Prev/Next etc...) **
-More powerful Playlist functionality (Titles and/or Chapters)
-report generator for your project (comes in handy)
-some builtin scripts to add a "Quiz" or a "User Access Code" (these can be done in DWS, but the script makes it much easier to implement -- and it's not for everyone, but it will teach you alot about how to setup menus)
-a more "streamlined" dvd structure than DWS 2.x (you need to look at the actual *.ifo files to see what I mean)

** These items can be done after Authoring DVD Folders -- using free tools found on the net

There are other similarities and differences, and I am not saying either is better than the other. The ability to pickup DWS2 (without prior authoring knowledge), and author a professional-looking DVD in a relatively short amount of time is an amazing accomplishment on the part of Ulead. DLP's access to DVD authoring commands (that some might never need to use) makes it a very powerful authoring package (but it comes at the expense of a learning curve).

    Regards,
    George
