A friend @ work is building his first PC, I talked him into buying (1) a Gigabyte "2 ounce" mobo, and (2) a Propus Athlon II x4 cpu
I talked him into overclocking, his first PC build and his first OC he is getting 3.25Ghz (13x250) out of a 2.6Ghz cpu and it hasn't crashed yet, he is actually nervous about it crashing, he said that if he games a couple of days and it doesn't crash he will push it further, temps not even in the 40's yet
I could see him getting 3.4Ghz easy, 3.6Ghz if he is lucky
Another convert welcomed into the fold, muhuhuhahahaha!!!!
ps. I have preached AMD/Intel neutrality, what ever is best on sale today

I'm seriously looking to purchase that AMD Quad just for kicks to see how well it can overclock. I've read good things about it and how it actually surpasses a Intel Q8200 with video encoding. I just need to decide if I want that or buy a new Panasonic LCD or Plasma TV on Black Friday. Hard to decide since my job began a work furlough 2 days a month which = loss in salary. But this Thanksgiving I am thankful that I still have a job!

ocgw, Did you use the stock AMD cooler for that or aftermarket? Looks like a nice CPU for a Micro-ATX MB.

I have my 620 overclocked to 3.3 won't go any higher. I find I need to back it off to 3.2 to encode BR using BD Rebuilder.

wulf109, you might want to check your RAM speed. That may be what's limiting the OC. CPU-Z is handy for that: http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php I've had to drop the RAM multiplier down on a couple of OC's to get stability, mainly if the OC runs the RAM too far above it's spec. 250Mhz is usually a reasonable FSB speed. Much above that you may have to start adjusting voltages and really improve the CPU cooling.

I'm using a Rosewil RCX-Z1 after market HSF,cheap with 92mm fan(newegg-$12). I'm using 1066 RAM with the multiplier set to the highest multiplier without exceeding 1066. I seem to have hit a wall at 3.3Hhz,increasing core voltage doesn't help.

I guided him into a aftermarket cooler, heavy enough to need a backplate, but I don't remember the make and model, w/ this much interest I will now report full detailsOriginally Posted by redwudz

 trust me!

ps. I can tell you 1 thing, he bought 1066 ram, I had him go w/ a 1.66:2 memory divider (default anyway on auto), when he brought the bus up to 250, it gave him 1000Mhz memory by cpu-z (has not crashed yet) LOL

Remember I never touched the hardware, only guided a newbie co-worker over the phone, he will be joining the site soon

Did you lower your mem divider?Originally Posted by wulf109

Did you raise NB v (mem controller)?

Did you try reduce HT multiplier?

If 600Mhz oc is the low end that would not be too shabby, hopefully it is better than average

I may go propus in my 2nd and move my Regor 245 to 3rd (replacing 6000+)

That's the same mobo I was thinking of using. I already have a CM GeminII S cpu cooler. I'll probably be ordering that cpu and mobo from Newegg.com later today. I'll be using some GSkill 4gb DDR2-800 ram that I have lying around.

wulf109 did you try lowering the memory divider to get a better oc?Originally Posted by wulf109

also try adding v to your NB (on die mem controller) and/or lowering the HT divider or NB frequency

btw I put a propus 630 in my backup rig, got it running @ 3.6Ghz so far (Crucial Balistix Tracer DDR2 800 @ DDR2 1028) ,haven't found its limit yet

 That is 14x257

Windows Experience Assessment 7.4 on cpu and mem equaling my Deneb core Phenom II X4 940 BE @ 3.8Ghz

Goal: Giga OC on air w/ a "left over" 4-pipe Phenom II stock cooler w/ reasonably low db's

Final outcome: 3.6Ghz w/ only .1v added to cpu w/ low db stable, cpu won't do 3.7Ghz w/o adding heavy cpuv and liquid cooling

How are you getting to at 14x multlier. I thought it was locked at 13x. My mistake I see your uaing a 630 not a 620.

Yeah, $12 more for 200mhz extra stock clockOriginally Posted by wulf109

I can get the 620 stable at 3.5Ghz for programs like DVD Shrink, but to get BD Rebuilder to work reliably I need to reduce to 3.3Ghz. I've tried increasing vcore, reducing NB frequency, lowering memory divider, increased NB voltage. It just won't work stable over 3.3Ghz. I'm using a Gigabyte 785-US2H motherboard.
-
Yeah same here, I have always had to lower my oc for BD-RB, after all the 2nd pass "pegs" all your cores @ 100%, it is the worst torture test of a cpu I knowOriginally Posted by wulf109

Now my Phenom II 940 would clock @ 3.8Ghz stable, but I would drop it to 3.6Ghz for absolute asurety that it would not crash during an "all nighter" and also because I got an early 140w cpu and even w/ a monster hsf temps are an issue during encoding, especially in the hot summer months

The newer Deneb core cpus come in 125w and 95w variants (higher yield)

Now I have read @ Tom's hardware, and looked @ the charts, L3 cache does not help encoding, and just creates a lot of heat so I tried my new cool running 95w propus 630 in my main rig

 guess what?

My Gigabyte mobo unlocks the multiplier, I have my Propus running right now idling @ 38*c w/ 1.25+ cpuv @ 19x200 for 3.8Ghz

 Will hold 34*c @ idle w/ .1+ cpuv for 3.6Ghz

The mobo this Propus is in now runs 8GB of DDR2 1066 @ 1066, oc on multi only

Giga oc accomplished albeit w/ a Coolermaster V8 hsf
