    Hi,

While using GFD (v1.02) to author some clips, I encountered the following error :

"Need to split output but there appears to be no %d in the filename pattern...."

    Here's what I did :

    1) used Rejig to demux 2 short video clips to m2v & ac3
    2) drag & drop both m2v files in GFD
    3) clicked on "Create DVD"

Can anyone tell me what I did wrong?

    Thanks !

I ran into a problem when, i tried to use the files from rejeg with GFD, I also got errors

I know rejig gets used & recommended, but so far ( for me ) the only thing that would accept the streams from rejig is rejig's dvd author,

gfd & muxman wouldn't accept them

    hi theewizard,

    thanks for the reply....

what should i use to demux the clips if rejig doesn't work well with gfd?

    regards...

I occasionally overshoot encoding size and use Rejig to boil M2Vs down a few percent. I've never had a problem using the results in GfD.

But rancid's error sounds like a problem with the filenames. Try making them short simple ascii words with no spaces.

  5. Does this error appear with both dvdauthor and MuxMan?
For using dvdauthor, you may try to 'premux' the streams with imago. For MuxMan I don't have know alternative. You can try to demux the files with pgcdemux (if source is DVD) or tmpgenc mpeg tools (for VCD and similar) or projectX/pvastrumento for DVB streams.

i use avidemux2 to extract the audio stream OR i use super to extract & convert to AC3 192kb

i use cce to create an mpv elementry stream and then gdpulldown to create the correct 29.97 m2v 15-20 minutes

    then author/mux with GFD-muxman

got the error with the rejig files using both dvdauthor & muxman

but since rejig was the only program accepting the JIGGED files and everything else works with GFD , i quit trying to use rejig, maybe i'll try again on a different project

hi, AlanHK : thanks for the reply... the filenames do not contain blanks but do have an underscore... about 17 char in total... will try shortening it... thanks !!...

hi borax : thanks for the reply... nope... i didn't use it with muxman... not very sure how to, actually ... will try those software that you recommended and have a go at it...

hi theewizard : thanks for the reply... i thought rejig was the easiest to use for demuxing (but i'm sure there are other just as easy, will need to experiment)... your recommendation sounded quite complicated... i hope i can follow them... you are right when you said "not every tool works well for every job"... that's the "challenging" part... finding the right combination of tools to work...

thanks all for taking the time to reply... it's back to the drawing board...

    update...

    i've tried the following :

    1) renamed the .m2v and .ac3 to a shorter name (e.g. vid1.m2v, vid1.ac3) still the same error occurred

    2) used TMPGEnc to demux into m2v & ac3 then run GFD and still no luck

here's what i'm trying to achieve : to create a simple DVD with menu for selection of clip 1 or clip 2... GSpot identified the clip as mpeg2 (DVD "VOB" format) codec... the clips are less than 10mins each...

it's just a simple test so that if i can get the method right, i will stick to it to author future dvds...

how should i go about it?... sorry but i'm a newbie in this...

    thanks !!

where did the mpeg you demuxed come from and what are specs of the source and the demuxed mv2

i justed used rejig in another project with sucess gfd took the m2v from rejig and the AC3 i extracted & converted from the source

    with no problems

on this project i created an mpeg2 from the source avi with CCE at 23.97 and used rejig to demux and create the m2v, the demuxed mp2 volume was too low , so i uses super to extract the audio from the source avi as ac3 at 224k 48k sampling ,with a 180% volume setting ( 80% increase )

i used that audio stream with the m2v from rejig in GFD-muxman , worked perfectly

in my previous attempt at using rejig the source mpeg2 came from another program, and rejig dvd author was the only thing that would accept the m2v output.

and i used cce to create an mpv from the mpeg2 then DGpulldown to get an m2v that GFD would accept

    hi theewizard,

the clips are from my jvc video cam... using GSpot it was identified as mpeg2, DVD VOB format...

    Container
    DVD "VOB" format
    MPEG-2 program stream << {1 vid, 1aud}
    Sys Bitrate : 10080 kb/s VBR

i just use rejig to demux this file into .m2v & ac3...

i've tried using the mpeg file (without demuxing) direct in GFD but it gave an error... so i had to demux it...

i thought it's going to be a simple process of demuxing and then authoring... looks like it's more complicated than i thought...

could it be that i didn't install muxman to work with GFD? what other info do you need?

    thanks !!

VOB format MPEGs aren't really kosher for authoring.

Perhaps running them through Restream might tidy them up.

No, it's included in the normal/full setup. Only if you have chosen a 'hand install' or update only, then it isn't automatically installed.
To use MuxMan, just set a mark at the last tab of the default settings ('authoring engine'), but do it before you insert your video.

hi AlanHK : thanks for the reply...
that's what i'm afraid of going into "dangerous territory" of tweaking resolution, aspect ratio, etc... i always thought handling vob mpegs would be a matter of demuxing and then authoring... looks like i'm wrong... anyway, what should i be setting in Restream??... i would like to keep the quality...

hi borax : thanks for your reply...
i did a full setup so i guess muxman should be included... do you think i need to activate muxman to avoid the error?

    regards...

Hello I had a similar error using dvdauthor gui . Restream fixed the problem. Check out this thread.

    hi freebird73717,

    thanks!.... restream did work...

but now towards the end of the processing, i encountered another error...

    "SCR moves backwards, remultiplex input."

the dvd folder and the vob files are created and i'm able to watch the individual vob files so i guess the above error may not have a major impact, at least GFD didn't fail...

but somehow, i'm still not able to see the menu to select the individual clips...

This is a severe error. In this case the DVD structure isn't fully created - therefore I think the navigation fails. Probably restream did only half the work...

Maybe it would be an idea to use restream for the source file, demultiplex afterwards and use the elementary streams in GfD.
    Have you tried MuxMan already?

    hi borax,

    thanks for your reply...

    i tried the following :

    1) restream didn't allow me to use the source - it detected it was a multiplexed file and asked me to demultiplex the video stream...

    2) muxman also rejected the source without indicating why... just a "Multiple File Open Status" popup that says "0 files accepted, 1 files rejected"...

thats muxmans way of saying, its a multiplexed stream not an elementry stream

yes, it's actually the source file that has not been demuxed... inputing the elementary video stream (.m2v) is ok though...

using muxman, i was able to "combine" both the elementary video & audio streams into a single vob - which isn't quite what i had in mind in the first place...

vobs are what you get when authoring DVD's. if that is NOT what you wanted , what is it you want to do.

programs like ulead will let you set vob size , if your wanting smaller vobs ,

if your want Dvix files to transfer to a 'data DVD' for playing then GFD is not the program to use

i'm sure there is something that will spit that vob, if thats what you want

    hi theewizard,

thanks for taking the time to reply...

my objective is to author a dvd that has a menu selection to select clip 1 or clip 2...

in what i'm trying to achieve, i should be getting at least (i think) 3 vobs, 1 for the menu/still, 1 for clip1 and 1 for clip2... i hope i'm correct in assuming this...

let me reiterate how i ended up where i am...

    1) i have 2 video clips from my jvc camcorder that i want to author to dvd with a menu selection
    2) GSpot says its mpeg2 (DVD VOB format)
    3) used rejig to demux (2 .m2v files & 2 .ac3 files)and GFD to author
    4) encountered error while authoring using GFD and was recommended to use restream
    5) the 2 elementary video from restream was used on GFD and again error encountered
    6) suggested that i use muxman - i tried with the 2 restream-ed elementary video and was successful in creating a vob (which merged both the clips to 1 vob)

so with that, i'm still wondering how i can achieve my objective of having a dvd with menu selection...

sorry for the confusion as i'm not very good at this...

    nope, nada,

dvds and authoring programs are not setup that way

vobs can be broken up by size settings, 600meg 1 gig 2 gig

    but not my content

the menu and the videos will span across one or more vobs and the info files tell the dvd player what cell in the vob starts the next chapter or video

now if you authored each item as a sperate dvd, then used a program like video redo you might be able to combine everything on one disc with out combining the files, why you want to do this, I don't know

I assume you are going to keep your source files. so having seperate vobs for future projects just becomes space consuming

thanks for the explanation, theewizard... i stand corrected...

i guess i'm trying to imitate what i saw on a commercial episodal dvd...

it has a menu to choose the episodes and within the dvd, there were many vobs... i can watch each individual episode by itself by selecting it (from PC, by the way)... the menu (which is also a vob, if i remember correctly) can also be used to select the desired episode... i'm not sure if this is the best method...

i understand what you are trying to say, it's not effective to have x vobs for x clips... i fully agree... but as a newbie i thought this would be a simpler method...

Have you done this with GfD in MuxMan mode or with MuxMan as stand alone application?
If that's working with GfD you are nearly at the point...
If you add the elementary files in GfD (MuxMan mode), you will already get a button to select each video from the menu. To have an additional button to play all videos, just add a 'play all' button (in GfD select 'Insert' - 'Playall button' from the menu)

you 'can' have multi-videos, and a button for each, but when look at the vobs, it won't be a seperate vob for each video, the menu selection will point to the correct point in the vob to start playing the selected video

    thanks for bearing with me...

GfD in MuxMan mode or with MuxMan as stand alone application?

i did it in standalone muxman... should the muxman radio button in "Authoring engine" of "Default Settings -> Permanent" tab be selected ? currently it's "dvdauthor"

If you add the elementary files in GfD (MuxMan mode), you will already get a button to select each video from the menu. To have an additional button to play all videos, just add a 'play all' button (in GfD select 'Insert' - 'Playall button' from the menu)
do i need to burn to dvd before i can see the button?... so far, i'm running it from my pc... i'm testing to see if it works before burning to it...

thanks for all your patience, borax & theewizard... i think i'm almost there, then...

that will depend on your player program, whether you are opening the movies vob OR wif your are opening the video folder

opening the folder should BUT not always display the menu

opening the movie vob is going to play the movie

Yes. Then GfD will use MuxMan to create the DVD (including menus).
If you pull a video on the menu background in GfD, a button is automatically created. After 'CreateDVD' you can test the 'result' with any soft player (like WinDVD, PowerDVD or MPC). If you set a correct path to your preferred soft player in the Default Settings -> "Permanent" tab ->Soft Player for DVD Preview, you can click on 'Show DVD' after 'CreateDVD' in GfD also.

    hi borax,

from "Show DVD" using MPC, it worked... i was able to select either clip 1 or clip 2 and it played fine...

but when i run it from MPC itself (not calling from GFD), the menu screen doesn't seem to work and i'm not able to make any selection...

does this mean that it'll also not work if i burn it to dvd??

    almost there...

  30. How you run it from MPC? I usually drag and drop in the MPC the VIDEO_TS folder.
