For all those who ask me privately how to download subtitles from MUBI:

simply rename .dash >> .webvtt

To convert to .srt use any online tool.

@pedrothelion can you please explain a bit more when you say just rename .dash to .webvtt? Inside the .mpd file which .dash should be renamed to .webvtt? What would be the complete URL to download since the renamed .webvtt file? Thanks!

This command will download an mp4 containing the subtitles.
Then, when you open the mp4 with Subtitle Edit, you get this

So you can save it as srt.

P.S. Site might have some security protocols that can interrupt the download, just run the command again and it will continue from where it left off.

OK, but which one? There are several text-subtitle-dash files and all of them are less than 1 KB. That doesn't make sense. And I guess the correct file extension is ".vtt", not ".webvtt".

I tried:

./yt-dlp --write-subs --allow-unplayable-formats www.blabla.mpd

It gave me only English subtitle in a 2 MB-sized MP4 file. Opened it with Subtitle Edit and saved as srt.

Subtitle downloading speed is much more slower than audio files (in my case, only 8-10 kbps)

How do we get all subtitles?

Command line to get all subtitles in DASH:

yt-dlp --skip-download --write-subs --all-subs --allow-unplayable-formats MPDlink

yt-dlp will download each subtitle, one by one, in alphabetical order: De-German first, En-English second, Es-Spanish third, Fr-French fourth, etc... You will end up with several tiny mp4 files. (If you use the command without "--skip-download", it will begin downloading the video after all subtitles are downloaded)

Just import MP4 files to Subtitle Edit and save as SRT.

For some languages, you'll need to arrange coding before saving.

But I still don't know how to get a specific language, for example; only German sub or only French sub. There isn't a command like "yt-dlp --write-subs-de" or "yt-dlp --write-subs -de"

I think that might be --sub-langs de

...it is not the correct command.

It works at Mubi. Subtitle Edit opens those MP4 files after 10-15 seconds. Not immediately.

And thank you for letting me understand the correct form, with quotes and commas.

For selected subtitles: --skip-download --write-subs --sub-langs "en, fr," --allow-unplayable-formats MPDlink (for English and French subs)

To list all subtitles: --list-subs --allow-unplayable-formats MPDlink

"skip-download" is for discluding video download... "allow-unplayable-formats" is for bypassing "that video is protected" warning.

It will export the wvtt file as

Episode01.fi_track1

which can then be opened and fine tuned in Subtitle edit for deleting duplicate lines and stuff.

Thank you! Looks like the command I used with yt-dlp downloaded subs for the last 10 minutes or so from the episode. But this is good, I'm one step closer to the final solution.
