  1. Whenever I play some MKV files with the AVC1 codec, i get a missing codec error. How do i fix that?

also, on another thread i read this:

What player do you use? MPC-HC and vlc have their own codecs.
Install Lavfilters should work with most players.
If you're using virtualdub use virtualdub2 or install ffdshow.

  3. No, I wanna edit them with VirtualDub 1.10.4, build 35491
Therefore, I conjecture that my question is:

How do I enable ffdshow support for AVC1 video in the VfW video settings/codecs section

.... but please do realize, that I don't even understand WHAT the f i am asking here......get it? So, please use laymans terms and lotsa handholding.

    EDIT:
And sadly enough, VirtualDub2 has got a virus , and i already have corona, so i'm hesitant to give my laptop a virus too.....

    false positive.
virtualdub2 is easier and updated ffdshow has not been updated since 2014.
open ffdshow vfw config and enable h264 decoder
