  1. I use MPC and KMplayer - shop bought DVDS play fine on these, no problem..
But DVDs made on my recorder, a Sony RDR-HXD1090 from the HDD to DVD will not do the same... It just sits there, saying 'playing' but nothing happens...

If I click 'next chapter' on MPC, it start playing.. and then I can right click, and get the root or title menu to display

are the dvds made by the recorder finalized ??
    Quote Quote
  3. yes, there are all finalized, they play on a normal DVD player (Sony DVP NS585) ok, etc, etc

I loaded VIDEO_TS.IFO into MPC, nothing showed, but kmplayer (V223 CUTA ) showed err 80040218, and a large list, but could not copy / paste that..

If I load VIDEO_TS. vob it loads the titles picture, but cannot navigate..

    other VOBs show the video..
I had a fix ages ago with win XP, but I upgraded to win 7 last year...

  4. Now here is something odd - I loaded Windows media player (its included in win7) and same problem with autoplay, and saw in there the right click menu entry 'dvd features' that only appears while in full screen!
this leads to a selection, one of which is 'update DVD information' (It is a finalized DVD-R, so it cannot be modified, or can it??)

Selecting this takes the WMP off fullscreen and prompts "this command overwrites any changes you have made to the selected discs title or chapter names"

I usually change the disc name in the recorder to a 'space' to prevent the title name of the disc being "Title menu - disc 132" :/

In windows, the disc name is 'LOGICAL VOLUME IDENTIFIER'...

After this 'update'?? WMP plays this disc straight away.....

If you know *what* I could download or mod to make this happen with ALL my videos, that would be great...

You might have answered the issue yourself.

In all the times I have dubbed (also with a Sony) from HDD to DVD I have retained the default title or a meaningful title (although I usually write something meaningful on the actual disk.

Inserting one of these disks into the PC drive and viewing the files in Windows Explorer shows the disk title (highest folder name) as 'Logical Volume Identifier' and not as 'Disk-84' which is what the title actually is on the player menu screen. Generated from the DVR.

Someone with more knowledge of the dvd-spec might confirm that the burnt disk must have some title. That 'space' could even be interpretated as an empty title and thus confuse the autoplay.

Assuming that is the issue, no program exists to revise a burnt disk to have an actual title. You can rip you disk to your HDD and use programs like ifoedit which may have such a fix and reburn the video_ts folder to disk or demux the mpeg2 video from your disks and use an authoring program such as avstodvd to create a new dvd and imgburn to burn that new disk.

  6. Thanks!! i shall try when I get home...

  7. well I could not figure out ifoedit... found some old DVDs that I had titled.. they still show 'LOGICAL VOLUME IDENTIFIER' and WMP calls it 'unknown disc'..

But! while looking around, I saw the 'black edition' of MPC earlier(I thought it was just a 'theme' for MPC-HC) But now saw reviews saying is it a full update and improvement!!

As for just playing a DVD in a PC you can not beat vlc. But with any DVD you do need a correct .ifo to start with.

There is one other possibility here. DVD-Recorders have two modes. There is Video Recording Mode and Video Mode. You might think that the first is the one to go for but create a DVD with that and it will not play in most drives. You have tested with a Sony but since you PVR is also Sony it could well be more accommodating.

Only in Video Mode can you create a DVD that should, media permitting, play in any drive.

If you are unsure what type of DVD you have made then look at the files in the video_ts folder and compare them with the list of files in 'What Is a DVD' accessed from the top of this web page. If you have any files with the name that is not in this list you have created a DVD in Video Recording Mode.

Ifoedit is not any easy program to learn but it is quite powerful. But in will do nothing for a DVD created in the wrong mode. To make a standard disk form that you have to do a different type of rip (copy) - older versions of Nero could do it - and then use the mpeg file to reauthor.

But let's just establish what type of DVD you have actually made.

  9. strange crashes, maybe due to tryin something in firefox?? or could JS be not so good at key-rollover on this site??? as I was about to say ..

Lucky this works without script! I found MPC-BE to a good solution!! :E just check the DVD is set , and it loads my recorded DVDs straight to the title menu!!

Yes VLC is good, but too basic for my needs...

If you dont know the Sony RDR-HXD1090, it has a good, big user guide, so no problems - I have used it for ten years and need to clear some space!!

Ten years ago in UK, there was not that much choice, and there was confusion about the function of it.. It was expensive, but it has proved its worth, other people had to upgrade due to buying cheap... :P

I guess there are not many who know it now, there only seem to 2 or 3 types out , total! A lot must have gone bankrupt... :O

Well the chances are that you do have standard DVDs created in 'Video Mode'. You could still confirm that for me tho.

MPC is a good player. But the developers at Videolan would be quite upset to hear their 'pet' called 'basic'. . Most dvd player functions are there. It is just that you have to delve a little deeper for them. And while it is not part of your current problem vlc can handle multi-zone which not all others can.

As I said earlier in the thread, Video Recording Mode disks WILL play in some players.

I also said that the likely-hood was you have Video Mode aka DVD-Video Disks. The folder list will confirm.

As for PC playback I am not so sure these days since more up-to-date software might well play them.

But your disks will not still autoplay ? That is what this topic is about even with the bells and whistles of MPC-BE.

the main use for VR mode is to edit, playback while recording, etc.. and then run out of space(only 2hrs unless you want compromise on quality)... see this link!
    http://lmgtfy.com/?q=VR+mode+disc+players

so what do you do if there is a 2.5 hour movie you want to record?? did I not mention It has HDD, that has 100 hour capacity at the same bit rate of the above DVD?
