When I record DVB-T stuff I get massive .ts files. Can someone advise the best way to get these into a more user friendly file format such as .mkv or mp4? Do I really have to use something like Handbrake to re-encode them?

    Thanks for any help!

:edit: And I also need to edit out the ad-breaks!!!

    Hi,
use Mkvtoolnix. Open the video there, on the bottom part there are track. Uncheck unwanted part and check start muxing. Possibly there are other video audio subtitles or other tracks too. So when you remux it you get rid of them.
But of course. It can be huge file. AVC film has about 3-5 GB.

Edit: remove adds use Avidemux for this.

I don't recommend AVIDemux for editing TS captures from a TV tuner. If there are errors in the transport stream, it falls over.

Download the trial for Cypheros TSDoctor and try it for removing advertisements and other editing. It is able to fix errors in the transport stream and is also able to convert DVB subtitles into SRT text format. It can export MKV. I don't know if it can re-encode edited files to a different codec. You might still need to use something like Handbrake for compressing edited files. I don't use Cypheros TSDoctor myself because VideoReDo TV Suite is a better choice for ATSC countries, but Cypheros TSDoctor has features which seem better for DVB-T contries,

    Hi usually_quiet,
I am recording TV really often and never met problem you mentioned. Just re muxing stream from multiplex that I want to mkv in mkvtoolnix. Then I open it in Avidemux to edit it and re encode it (or direct stream copy here). But maybe I am just lucky, for all those months.

From my perspective, you are lucky. I have been using TV tuner cards since 2010. Even with newer, better ATSC tuner devices, at least 25% of my OTA TV tuner captures contain transmission errors. Believe it or not, I have seen transmission errors in captures from my digital cable tuner as well. In my case, AVIdemux was a failure for editing many files, while VideoReDo worked very well.

If you know the time codes for the parts you want to keep you can do that in MKVToolnix as well by using split by parts based on timecodes. Preceeds the parts with "+" to join them.

Maybe the problem is that I am not using ATSC. And quality is 100% And I know, there should be even problem with cable. We have signal strength about 2/3 but signal quality at max. But I do not record DVB-C. Just DVB-T. I have Avermedia A835B for information. With 100% signal. On multiplex I am interesting in. And as my signature says using VLC for capture.

Edit:Hi, Videobruger. It is not a frame accurate cutting? is it? Because I often find, that there are not I frames when commercial ends (x-th part of tv show begin).

Not everyone in DVB-T countries has 100% signal quality for every channel. Re-muxing isn't going to help if there is corrupted/missing data in the recorded stream, and may not even be successful. Cypheros TS Doctor exists for a reason.

I don't use VLC. The last time I tried it, it was broken for ATSC, but there are plenty of alternatives. Digital cable tuners here use a type of CAM and require special software which complies with recording restrictions that may be imposed by cable service providers. VLC is not one of them.

  10. VideoReDo can also deal with errors in stream very effectively in majority of cases. I used tsdoctor few times but sometimes even that program can't help in some situations. Also I wouldn't use tsdoctor for cutting, VRD is far superior with its smart rendering component, I'm not sure tsdoc even has smart rendering ability.

I use TSDoctor for all my off air recordings. Works well. Previously before HDTV I used ProjectX for SD material.
